i dont think so. thor in the infinity gauntlet series (thanos with power gem) was beating him up till he teleported away thors hammer. he also was beating him up again right before thanos turned him to glass.
thor is physically menacing when he's not holding back.
I think you have it confused maybe? Because Thor with the Power Gem, belt of strength while on Warrior Madness couldn't physically beat Thanos in hand to hand combat. He also taken Thor and Thing simultaneously in hand to hand. He has taken full on blows from Mjolnir withouth blinking.
I was actually scanning through my copy of Avengers: Celestial Quest yesterday and he fights (albeit briefly) Thor plus like 5 other Avengers at once, Thor hits him from behind with Mjolnir and Thanos just swats/blasts him away with ease (while taking out Vision and Scarlet Witch).

thor has also fought and prevailed where odin has lost...
and i dont have it backward... thor puts up a hell of a fight when the universe is at stake and he's fighting thanos with power gem (infinity gauntlet series).
avengers shouldnt count. thats thor on a team. it just makes the villain seem more powerful. thor is often downplayed, to make the team look better (as in working together)
any issue numbers on the thanos fighting thor with gem, belt and warrior maddness?
yeah thanos takes this easy. thanos has taken out the surfer numerous times i think, and nobody seems to really know if thor could take surfer one on one when their out to kill eachother. thanos is a class above thor.

a well written thor, much like a well written ss, could give thanos trouble. especially if he loses it in battle and goes warrior mad.
thanos is more powerful, but thor could certainly give him a run. when both were amped in thor, thor ko'd him (though later retconned as a clone. have i mentioned how much i hate what marvel has done thanos who USED to be a very cool character?) thor had a good showing in ig against him as well. assuming no jobbing, it is closer than most appear to think.
I would tend to agree with you Leo as far as Thor being a difficult opponent. Until recently I would have said that Thanos would win 10/10 and completely dismiss the Thor in such a fight, but after looking into some of Thor's rather impressive and surprisingly diverse feats I too think it would be a good fight (assuming both fight to their full potential). While I'd still say Thanos takes a majority, I now have a healthier respect for Odin's kid.

Thor as he was portrayed in Avengers was usually a watered-down version of how he was portrayed in his own book. Thanos takes that version down 10/10. Against Thor as portrayed in his own book, Thanos still takes home a solid majority. Thanos is simply beyond Thor in every conceivable category.
