Media influence

All the time I hear people defend movies and music and say that

There have been many arguments as to whether movies, tv and music influence the decisions and actions that youths take in North America. (I am sure this debate goes on across the pond, but I have no experience of that so I can't comment about it.)

I find it amusing when people say that these media influences have absolutely no role in how kids act. "It only influences children who were more inclined to act that way anyhow" is a common response.

But something interesting happened to me the other day. It was my folks 45th anniversary, so I thought I'd go get them a nice bottle of wine that they could both enjoy together. I walked into the store, asked for the wine expert and told him to please give me the lowdown as to which wine was not only worth the money that I was willing to spend, but also which wine was most appropriate to the situation.

In our discussion of fine wines, I asked if the movie Sideways had any influence over wine sales. The guy laughed and told me that he can't keep california wines in stock now, that everyone drinks pinot, and that they can't move merlot because of the one scene in that movie. So here we had adults whose buying decisions and preferences were dictated by a movie.

Why do people find it so difficult to believe that the same thing isn't happening with youths?

the media dictates trends and what is hip.
as i always have said, the culprits are conveniently overlooked, like gangsta scumbag rap shit as a shining example. its so frikin obvious its a direct influence on the decline of youth today. the magnitude in which every media outlet crams this pimp/whore culture is so immense that its impossible to avoid. not only that, but we are raising a nation of consumer junkies, only interested in material posessions, and have no interest in thinking for themselves, but would rather have the t.v. tell them what they want. combine those 2 elements and you get disaster. but who cares? lets just blame video games and ignore the blatent problem...

absolutely media has the greatest influence over people who dont think.

Valid points. If media influence didn't exist then there wouldn't be as much if any media advertising because if the success rate was low and no or little profit was amassed from the influence it wouldn't necessitate the sheer amount of advertising.

Note: advertising can be anything and through any media, for a person, product, lifestyle, culture, information etc and multimedia just makes it easier. It doesn't have to be direct but companies don't give free products to celebs for nothing or pay sponsorships to get their stuff in films, music videos or at publciised events etc.

the media puts stuff out like that, but sometimes trends do happen without any true intention.

Aren't video games a form of media?

Anyhow, on topic. Me thinks that the media is a huge influence on people. From the way we speak, words we use, way we dress, things we by. Everyone in one way or another is influenced by some form of media.

But, I also think that the extent of that influence really lies with that person that's receiving it. So, for that reason I think it's unfair to lie the blame solely on the media (be it a video and/or rap music 🙄) for any problems we're having with our children.

On the other hand, like I said, while the blame can't be placed solely at the front door of the media, it's doesn't make a parent/guardians job easy to raise intelligent, socially conscious children when you've got Paris Hilton seeming like the social norm and kids not even flinching at beating a hooker to death in a video game. (For the record, I love Grand Theft Auto Vice City. Almost made it to 1 million kills. *feels important*)

Now, before I leave, you have to know that this is just my opinion which admittedly isn't worth much. I'm not a psychologist/specialist, I haven't done any research, and I haven't read any of the research that is out there. I could, but seeing as this is a small blip of a forum seen only by people that I don't know nor will ever meet, I figure it doesn't warrant that kind of energy. Good day. 🙂

I think media does influence many people. I think that children are more prone to it because of their age though. But everything these days can have subliminal messages. Even disney has hidden things in it, so people just pick up on it, and others don't, it might have to do with how your brain functions itself.

Trainspotting is a good example of that. At some points in the film, it definetly did make you want to try heroin.

Sideways

Misconception PVS, the movie isn't about drinking wine. It's about people whos hobby is drinking wine, nothing more.

It's actually an outstanding movie, one of the best from last year, and this is coming from someone who doesn't know shit about wine.

Still a lot ppl sell (what my professor always called/calls) a lot of Horse Shit about this topic.

Great link Bardock, it was damn funny. As for Sideways, it was a good movie, but it is pathetic that people are going out of their way to bring that reality to their life.

I used to be a fly-fishing guide, actually I still guide a few weeks out of the year up in the northwest territories. The movie a river runs through it did for fly fishing what Sideways did for whine. I had people talking to me all the time how they took up the sport because it was such a great movie and then waxed philosophically about the zen of fly fishing and it's meaning in life. All I could think is, you're all turd brains, and as much as I love what I'm doing, lemmings like you sort of cheapen it for me.
