New War of the Worlds movie?

I heard some rumours, concering Tom Cruise, Stephen Speilberg, and it actually being set in 1890s England like the original.

A take on the actual original storyline interests me greatly- anyone got any more?

Sounds interesting.

Indeed..Most book adaptations have been pretty kool lately...Hopefully this is.

The idea that it will be more like the original is indeed interestuing... if, however, some thing can be accepted by a modern day audience:

1. A story called War of the 'Worlds' axctually concerns an invasion of the UK

2. Aliens of such apparent intelligence are defeated by something that seems freaking obvious to modern day minds

3. It is not so much a valiant sturggle as a travelogue during the apparent end of civlisation, with a few morals thrown in.

If Tom Cruise is indeed in and is indeed the journalist hero of the story, it is hard to see him taking so much of a passive role- all the Journalist does in the story is run like hell, try and find his fiance, and then go a bit mad at the end before he finds out everything is ok.

On the other hand... and this might just be because I just read the second volume oif League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, which was most entertaining with its take on the Martians... if they can get the visuals right this could be astounding.

Heh, that was pretty much all he did in Minority Report, just run away!

Not an invalid point... but even so, he pulled off heroics at the end. Will he really accept a role in whuch he is essentially powerless?

Probably not, just a bit of joking around in that last post.

But from the sound of it, it indeed does not sound like the token Tom Cruise performance.

The rumours will have to be sifted...

You also have the problem of making an object as basically fatuous as a tripod look good on screen.

haha, surely they will update teh ship to make it visually stimulating for todays audiences.

Well, the 1955 movie had them in flying machines instead... but that actually kinda detracted from the style of it.

And if they are not in walking machines then there is a lot of stuff you have to lose out on; chasing the journalist through the Thames, and the battle with the Thunderchild in the Estuary...

It all depends on how faithful they want to keep it, but these are all fantastic things to film if they get it right.

Agreed Tom Cruise Isn't much of an actor in most of his films other than Rainman. But then again this isn't much of a part.

Heck, it's his wife in the original, not his fiancee... I am letting the audio version confuse me. Mind you, that audio version is neat!

Anyway, if anyone gets any news on this, I would like to hear... maybe it's not going to be like the original after all.

My dad will be over the moon. He loves the original.

is it just me or war of the worlds getting really old and boring!

it is just you

me too, ohhh a new make. goes loking for Jeff Waynes CD "War Of The Worlds" Im gonna sit down and listen to tunes like "Eve Of The War" and "Forever Autumn"............ smooooooooooooth. I hope they will make a remake of the original

Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise, have joined forces to make a new film version of the HG Wells novel. The film, to be shot next year, will star Cruise while Spielberg will direct. Both will alsobe producers. With the backing of the two studios Dreamworks and Paramount, the film is sure to be one of the "big movies" of 2006, and is further evidence of Hollywood's obsession with adapting novels. The script will be written by David Koepp, who wrote the first two Jurassic Park scripts for Spielberg as well as the more recent Spider-Man adaptation.

Is the movies supposed to take place In the late 19th century/early 20 century or is it supposed to take place at present time?

with our new special effects it will be entertaining, we havent had a remake of those types of movies in a while, would be kinda atticipated if it was hyped up

We don't have a confirmation of when the new film will be set, sadly.

I actually went out and bought the book,"War of the Worlds today". I want to read the story and watch the movie old and new to compare.
