He may can't fight well but he has his speed which helps him out alot. Also, he can jump on an enemies head or a bosses head which is almost like fighting, and can also do the spin dash.

Well, I hardly see Sonic do any punches or kicks except for Sonic Battle (GBA), but his speed sometimes gives him the advantage during a fight and speed is part of fighting.
