Let me just say that God is not opposed to us having things, He is opposed to things having us. At least when you get saved you can start laying up for yourselves treasures in Heaven where thieves don't break in and still and where neither moths nor rust destroy. Those things will last forever. What things you ask?

Everything that you do for God will be tested with fire. If the motive behind what you do survives the test then your reward will remain for eternity. Some of us will have crowns (glorious headware), and robes of righteousness (glorious apparel). Some of us will have more responsibility and glory than others. But yet there is no jealousy or envy.

25 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. 26 For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? What profit is it? You have gained nothing in the final analysis. Isn't your soul (along with the spirit) more valuable than material things? Glad you asked. The soul/spirit is eternal, it will exist forever somewhere. Why spend all your life and time pursuing something that you cannot take with you when you die?

The idea is that God is the infinite good, and that being made to love the infinite good, or if you prefer, to worship it, is in itself the greatest good possible for a creature.

Much as those cartoons can be attacked on many fronts, my favourite part of them is the way they attack other belief systems via attempts at rational historical analysis- for example, its attack on Islam via trying to expose it as a fabrication derived from moon god worship, something it tries to back up with historical sources. It's all done without decent sourcing and does not constitute any sort of academic argument, but at least the fundamentals of argument via factual analysis have some basis.

The reason I find that amusing, of course, is because it's exactly that rational process that undermines most of what the cartoons want to say as well, as all of a sudden when it comes to Biblical references they are meant to be accepted without question and all this rationality apparently goes on holiday. There's not a single target here that couldn't just invert the argument and attack Christianity in the same way, making the whole thing a pointless experience. Not that that's news with this sort of proselytising.

That's always been my biggest question with JIA. If you're actually trying to sell people on your religion - and after years of this drivel we have no reason to believe otherwise - you'd want to use the most effective means possible. And I can't imagine his one-sided, preachy copy/paste style does much good. Why not adapt? Why not engage peoples' objections directly? Wouldn't your success rate be higher?
