This is probably an obvious question and actually has happened on some occasion with Vader running into other darksiders like Celeste Morne. But what would happen if the GE had run into an ancient Dark lord like Exar Kun or another, or had run into a Sith who reawakened. Would they take much more precaution than dealingwith Jedi, would they send Vader with more than his usual detachment of stormies, and what would happen if Vader was defeated? What extent would it take for Palpatine himself to get involved?

Orbital bombardment. It's the only way to be sure.

These things and more."
Eh I'd probably more go for in adding Shadow Guardsmen in there too.
But if the GE happened to get wind of a powerful Sith Lord, first things first, intel would first be reviewed, capabilities and so forth. This probably moreso being done by the Inquisitors/Dark Jedi of the GE, with assistance from I.I.
That done, a plan with the right tools being set in motion. As King said, they'd probably send Inquisitors with Stormtroopers or Shadow Guardsmen, the Stormtroopers though if they have gained sufficient intel.
Will probably SpecForce with a particular gear loadout to help backup the Inquisitors/Guardsmen. Probably Shadow Stormtroopers with a Stormtrooper Commander. Or they throw in a Dark Trooper variant such as a Purge Trooper or Phase 2.
The Sith Lord would get overwhelmed and killed. This all going if the GE knows the capabilities of the Sith Lord and had sufficient skill to defeat Vader.
Now if by some chance all that fails, then the GE would probably just orbital bombard the location as a final method.
If by some unlikely reason even the Sith Lord would escape that, then yeah...probably Palpatine would get involved and destroy him.
But the latter 2 scenarios wouldn't be likely, as the task force sent against the Sith Lord with proper intel and gear should be sufficient in taking the Lord down.
It depends, really. There were Sith artifacts that made you unharmed from orbital bombardment by just touching them. It's entirely possible that this wouldn't even destroy some of those artifacts, and it's not going to do anything to spirits.
True, however what if the orbital bombardments became full fledged BDZs? The planet becomes a radioactive floating rock pretty much.

It wouldn't come to bombardment I'm pretty sure, even if that isn't effective, then Palps would get involved. Even still as I put, a good enough task force would be able to kill the Sith.
Orbital bombardment is really very, very rarely used in SW. It doesn't seem to even been all that effective against some types of locations- the temple at Ossus was bombed a bit, but those under it remained safe.
