Texas School District Removes "The Diary of Anne Frank"
A school district in suburban Fort Worth, Texas has ordered its librarians to remove The Diary of Anne Frank from their shelves and digital libraries, along with dozens of other books that were challenged by parents last year.
The book purge at the Keller Independent School District in Keller, Texas was requested Tuesday by a district executive in an email:
"By the end of today, I need all books pulled from the library and classrooms," wrote Jennifer Price, Keller ISD's executive director of curriculum and instruction.
Sore Loser Utah Parents Force Probe of Child's Gender
After one competitor outperformed the rest of the field in a girls' state-level competition last year, the parents of the competitors who placed second and third lodged a complaint with the Utah High School Activities Association calling into question the winner's gender.
David Spatafore, the UHSAA's legislative representative, addressing the Utah Legislature's Education Interim Committee on Wednesday, said the association—without informing the student or family members about the inquiry—asked the student's school to investigate.
"The school went back to kindergarten and she'd always been a female," he said. To protect the student's identity, Spatafore said he would not reveal the sport, the classification of play, nor the school the student attended.
Such secret policing of children's bodies was made possible in Utah by HB11, a controversial bill passed by the state House and Senate in March that banned transgender girls from competing in school sports.
Republican Governor Spencer Cox was among those critical of the bill, pointing out at the time of the vote that, of the four trans children in the state who play sports, only one of them was a girl, CBS News reported.
Despite the new rules essentially prohibiting just one child from competing in school sports, Cox’s veto was overturned by the state legislature and enacted all the same.
A judge ruled on Friday that Utah ca not enforce a ban on transgender youths playing in girls sports until legal challenges to the law are resolved. That decision comes after Judge Keith Kelly also rejected an attempt to dismiss legal challenges to the ban.
While Republicans have insisted that trans youths participating in girls sports is unfair, the Utah High School Activities Association could only point to one transgender girl playing in K–12 sports in March who would even be affected by the ban.
Advocates have said the rules promote transphobia and discrimination. Families of three trans youth athletes sued over the Utah ban earlier this year, arguing the law violates the Utah Constitution.
