RATING (0 TO ****): * 1/2

XXX: STATE OF THE UNION, directed by Lee Tamahori, is a mindless and exceedingly dumb action picture that alternates between cheesy and boring. But no matter how much firepower and explosions the movie throws at the audience, it is mainly a colossal bore.

Vin Diesel, most recently seen tending kids for Disney in THE PACIFIER, has been replaced as XXX. Instead of Diesel, the studio made the unusual and silly casting choice of Ice Cube as XXX. Cube, as Darius Stone, is chosen to be the new XXX agent, because they need someone with "more attitude." The script for the fourth movie is reportedly already written, and, since the ending makes it clear that they want to try other people in the lead, perhaps next time they'll go with Rob Schneider or Reese Witherspoon.

Struggling hard to find something positive to say about this movie, whose plot is about the destruction of the capitol and the attempted murder of almost everyone in command from the president on down, I finally thought of something. I can say that this is without a doubt the best film ever made that features a tank battle inside in an aircraft carrier.

Ice Cube, bless his heart, is to be commended. I sure couldn't say things like, "Keep this up and you ain't gonna have nothin' left, hillbilly," in the heat of an tank engagement and keep a straight face. Could you?

XXX: STATE OF THE UNION runs a long 1:42. It is rated PG-13 for "sequences of intense action violence and some language" and would be acceptable for kids around 11 and up.

The film opened nationwide in the United States on Friday, April 29, 2005. In the Silicon Valley, it is showing at the AMC theaters, the Century theaters and the Camera Cinemas.
