That aside, as you implied, SS is a character "trapped by signature." In other words, how do you do away with some signature item w/o changing the essence of the character? Answer: you can't.

Another example of this is Wonder Woman: she can take blows from Superman but can't handle bullets or arrows (I won't go into the p.s.i. or demoralizing "reasons" for this, since I've shown in other threads that they don't hold up under scrutiny). Her signature move is deflecting bullets with her bracelets. If you were gonna make her durability more consistent, you'd have to do away with that, and deflecting bullets with her bracelets "is what everybody thinks when you talk about" her.
