Not always. Led Zeppelin's signature tune is Stairway To Heaven, which is, without doubt, their worst song.
The Clash's signature tune is London Calling, an ok song, but dwarfed by most of their other stuff.
Radiohead's signature tune is Creep, a boring song which doesn't deserve to be the only knowledge most people have of the band.
Point is, it's better to dig deep and find the really meaningful, important songs that bands will have poured their heart and soul into, rather than just settling for sing along hooks and catchy guitar riffs. Hooks can fade if overplayed, emotion and complexity cannot.
I agree Stairway to Heaven annoys the hell outta me. It got old the first 1000000000 times I heard it.

No, I'm not a slave to the 'classics' like most people. Stairway To Heaven is an annoying, overplayed corny piece of crap. It's bubblegum prog. Ten Years Gone, Nobody's Fault But Mine, What Is And What Should Never Be, Bring It On Home, When The Levee Breaks, THAT is quality Led Zeppelin. Anyone with any knowledge of Zep knows this.
