The secret origin of the Hulk is sourced in tragedy. Robert Bruce Banner was the son of Dr. Brian Banner, an atomic physicist, and his wife, Rebecca. An alcoholic, Brian Banner was driven insane by feelings of jealousy of Rebecca's adoration for Bruce and his gnawing paranoia that Brian's own work in radiation had mutated his son into becoming a genetic freak. Subjected to domestic violence and abuse at an early age, Bruce Banner tragically witnessed his mother's murder at the hands of his own father. Despite building a career in advanced academia and research, Bruce spent his life repressing his anger and rage... until it was ultimately released in the gamma bomb explosion that transformed him into the very monster that his father predicted he'd become. The Hulk was not only a founding member of the original Avengers, but the formation of the group revolved entirely around him as Loki attempted to use Hulk to destroy his brother Thor. Despite subtly manipulating Rick Jones into gathering heroes like Iron Man, Giant Man and Wasp to engage the Hulk in combat, Thor saw through Loki's ruse and combining their efforts, the fledgling team defeated Loki and established the premiere superhero team of the Marvel Universe. While the Hulk would eventually leave the group due to personal differences, the institution of the team would continue to endure. From Avengers #300:

At each others' throats just as much as they united to combat threats, the Defenders were billed as Marvel's uniquely non-traditional team of superheroes. They would unite to combat various threats like the Undying Ones, Nebulon, the Infinity Gauntlet, Dormammu, the Heart of the Universe, and most recently, Nul the Breaker of Worlds. Characteristic of their offbeat adventures, the original Defenders would, at one point, even be cursed by their recurring foe, Yandroth, who used Gaea's power to force them to automatically unite whenever a catastrophe placed Earth in peril. A condition none of them appreciated and ironically quite representative of their perpetual non-team legacy. From Defenders vol.2 #1:

The saga of Planet Hulk, however, would come to a tragic end. The sabotaged warp core of his shuttle exploded, laying his newfound home and family to waste. Convinced by his surviving Warbound to live on for vengeance, Hulk would return to Earth to bring retribution to those he held responsible.
