Orrin Hatch, Republican senator and fixture in Utah politics, dies at 88

A staunch conservative on most economic and social issues, he also teamed with Democrats several times during his long career on issues ranging from stem cell research to rights for people with disabilities to expanding children’s health insurance. He also formed friendships across the aisle, particularly with the late Edward Kennedy.

Hatch also championed Republican issues like abortion limits and helped shape the US supreme court, including defending Justice Clarence Thomas against sexual harassment allegations during confirmation hearings.

He later became an ally of Donald Trump, using his role as chairman of the powerful Senate finance committee to get a major rewrite of the US tax codes to the president’s desk. In return, Trump helped Hatch deliver on a key issue for Republicans in Utah with a contentious move to drastically downsize two national monuments that had been declared by past presidents.

Hatch retired in 2019 and was noted for his side career as a singer and recording artist of music with themes of his religious faith, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine, and their six children.

One issue Hatch returned to over the course of his career was limiting or outlawing abortion, a position that put him at the center of one of the nation’s most controversial issues. He was the author of a variety of “Hatch amendments” to the Constitution aimed at diminishing the availability of abortions.

In 1991, he became known as one of Thomas’s most vocal defenders against sexual harassment allegations from law professor Anita Hill. Hatch read aloud at the confirmation hearings from “The Exorcist,” and he suggested that Hill stole details from the book.

Hatch also helped usher through legislation toughening child pornography laws and making illegally downloading music a prosecutable crime.

For Hatch, the music-download issue was a personal one. A member of the faith widely known as Mormon, he frequently wrote religious songs and recorded music in his spare time as a way to relax from the stresses of life in Washington. Hatch earned about $39,000 in royalties from his songs in 2005.

One of his songs, “Unspoken,” went platinum after appearing on “WOW Hits 2005,” a compilation of Christian pop music.

Unafraid to fight politically, he said he always made a point to quickly become friends with those he had arguments with. Hatch was used to playing tough _ he learned to box as a child in Pittsburgh to fend off the attacks of older, larger students.

When Hatch announced he would not seek re-election in 2018, he said “every good fighter knows when to hang up the gloves.”

After moving to Utah in the early 1970s, Hatch _ a former bishop in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints _ ran for his first public office in 1976 and narrowly upset Democratic senator Frank Moss.

In 1982, he held off challenger Ted Wilson, the Democratic mayor of Salt Lake City, to win a second term by a solid margin.

George Pérez, a famed comic book artist who was influential in shaping the Wonder Woman character people know today, died on Friday. He was 67.

A family friend announced the news in a post on social media. Pérez died peacefully at his home with his wife by his side, said Constance Eza. He had an advanced stage of pancreatic cancer.

"We are all very much grieving but, at the same time, we are so incredibly grateful for the joy he brought to our lives," Eza wrote on Saturday. "To know George was to love him; and he loved back. Fiercely and with his whole heart. The world is a lot less vibrant today without him in it."

In a career that spanned over four decades, Pérez's meticulous pencil was behind some of the biggest comic book heroes. He co-created The New Teen Titans at DC Comics in 1980 and drew The Avengers for Marvel Comics. He helped ink the closure of a chapter on Superman.

Pérez's mid-'80s reboot of Wonder Woman returned the superheroine to her Greek mythology origins. Patty Jenkins, who directed the Wonder Woman movies, has cited Pérez's interpretation of the character as a major influence.

In a post remembering Pérez, DC Comics described the artist as a "writer, co-plotter, penciller, and inker," who left his mark on the Man of Steel. Pérez designed villain Lex Luthor's iconic purple-green warsuit in Action Comics, and penned stories for The Adventures of Superman.

After he was brought on to work on DC's New 52 version of Superman in 2011, Pérez lamented "corporate comics." He called his brief stint on the project "the nadir of my career," and suggested he was unhappy with top-level changes to his contributions.

"If the fans love it, fantastic, my name's attached to it. If they don't like it, I can't help that, even though my name's still attached to it," Pérez told ComicBook.com.

"George Pérez had an art style that was both dynamic and incredibly expressive," said DC Publisher and Chief Creative Officer Jim Lee. "His art was the perfect storytelling canvas for some of the most important events in DC history. While he will be sorely missed, his work will live on with a countless number of fans, as well as all the talent he's influenced over the years."

After Pérez was diagnosed with stage 3 pancreatic cancer in late November, friend Constance Eza kept fans updated on Pérez's health with frequent posts on his Facebook page. Fans responded by flooding the comments with well wishes and photos they'd taken with Pérez at comic conventions — as they did over the weekend.

"George's true legacy is his kindness," Eza wrote on Saturday. "It's the love he had for bringing others joy — and I hope you all carry that with you always. Today is Free Comic Book Day. A day George absolutely loved and a fitting day to remember his contributions to comics and to our lives. I hope you'll enjoy your day today with him in mind. He would have loved that."

Trevor Strnad, the vocalist and leader of the Black Dahlia Murder, has died at 41.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Trevor Scott Strnad. Beloved son, brother, and Shepard of good times, he was loved by all that met him,” reads a statement that was posted to the band’s official social media account. “A walking encyclopedia of all things music. He was a hugger, a writer, and truly one of the world’s greatest entertainers. His lyrics provided the world with stories and spells and horror and whimsy. It was his life to be your show.” At the end of their statement, the band included the number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 800-273-8255.

Strnad formed the influential metal band in Waterford, Michigan, which is just outside of Detroit. They released a demo album, What A Horrible Night To Have A Curse, in 2001. They soon started performing shows around the Midwest and signed to Metal Blade Records. Their studio debut, Unhallowed, was released in 2003. The Black Dahlia Murder continued to release a new album every other year; their most recent was 2020’s Verminous.

Mickey Gilley, Country Singer Who Inspired Urban Cowboy, Dead at 86

According to his spokesperson at the theater, Gilley died at Cox South in Springfield after being diagnosed with bone cancer. He had also developed complications, including pneumonia and kidney failure. A memorial service in Branson will take place at a future date that hasn’t been determined yet.

Gilley was among the stars who brought a whole new level of interest to Branson when they opened theaters there, including Roy Clark, Glen Campbell, Jim Stafford, Ray Stevens, Tony Orlando, Mel Tillis, Andy Williams, and Shoji Tabuchi.

Orlando, well-known as a singer, actor, and music executive, admitted that Gilley’s passing hit him hard.

“Mickey Gilley has been my friend for 51 years,” Orlando said. “This is a great loss to the city of Branson, country music, and for me. When I moved to Branson, we’d see each other all the time. We had such a great relationship that he refused to do a Christmas show because he loved my Christmas show so much. He was very gracious and kind like that. And because of Mickey’s great character, I not only came to work in this great city, but I’ve lived here for 32 unbelievable years. He was such a deep-hearted, beautiful person, and Branson had just lost a really incredible part of this city. I personally can tell you there’s a hole in my heart, and this is one of the greatest losses I’ve ever had.”

Shoji Tabuchi was a longtime golfing buddy of Gilley and had first-hand knowledge of his sense of humor.

“It shocked me, and I feel so sad,” Tabuchi said of Gilley’s passing. “But Mickey loved Japanese sushi, and I would always see him at the restaurant. He would call me ‘Sushi’ Tabuchi.”

Gilley had a great career in country music with 39 Top 10 hits and 17 Number 1 songs. He was a cousin of Jerry Lee Lewis and Jimmy Swaggart and had survived car and plane crashes.

But his life and career changed drastically in 1980 when he teamed with Johnny Lee to provide the music and setting for the iconic movie “Urban Cowboy” starring John Travolta.

Coming out of the disco era, that movie, partially filmed at Gilley’s famous nightclub in Pasadena, Texas, started a whole new craze of popularity for country music and bars that offered line dancing and mechanical bulls.

“Bingo!” Gilley said when he first heard that Travolta was interested in a movie that would involve his nightclub. “Saturday Night Fever...Country Night Fever! I knew if he did the movie, it was going to have some credibility.”

Springfieldians Sandy Davis and her husband Jim count themselves among Gilley’s many fans. Sandy remembers visiting the original nightclub as the Urban Cowboy phenomenon was taking off.

“I did get on the bull, but they didn’t turn it on because there was a weight limit, and I didn’t weigh enough at the time,” she said. “But you just brought it home with you and went, ‘Wow, this is pretty unique, and I’ve actually been there to see this in person.’”

“Urban Cowboy changed a lot about what people thought country music was and how they dealt with people who were in the country-western entertainment field,” Jim added.

The Oak Ridge Boys saw that change happen first-hand. Initially a gospel quartet, they moved more towards country music in the mid-1970s. In the early ‘80s, after Urban Cowboy came out, they had many mainstream pop hits, including “Elvira,” “Bobby Sue,” and “American Made.”

“Urban Cowboy started a lot of the crossover craze,” said Joe Bonsall, the tenor singer for the Oak Ridge Boys. “I think Urban Cowboy helped us. Everybody in country music was. Mickey Gilley helped take country music to that next level of being accepted by everybody. That ship rose up and took a lot of ships with it. Urban Cowboy was such a big deal, and Mickey and Johnny were crossing over to the pop market. Then Dolly Parton had ‘Working 9-to-5′, and Crystal Gayle, Eddie Rabbit, Kenny Rogers, and a whole lot of others had crossover hits.”

Dennis Waterman, known for his roles in TV shows including Minder, The Sweeney and New Tricks, has died, his family have said. He was 74.

Waterman became one of the best-known faces on British television in the 1970s when he played Det Sgt George Carter opposite John Thaw in ITV's police drama The Sweeney.

He enjoyed more success in Minder from 1979 to 1989 as Terry McCann, the bodyguard and partner to George Cole's wheeler dealer Arthur Daley.

He then went on to star in the comedies On the Up and Stay Lucky, before another popular and long-running role as another Cockney detective in New Tricks, which ran from 2003 to 2015.

He became well-known for singing the theme songs to many of his shows, and was caricatured by David Walliams in Little Britain as a result. Paying tribute, actor and comedian Matt Lucas tweeted: "I grew up watching Dennis Waterman's iconic performances in The Sweeney and Minder. His guest appearance in our Little Britain Live show at Hammersmith Apollo - in which he hilariously duetted with David's absurd impersonation of him - remains the absolute highlight of my career."

Born on January 10, 1941, in Greeley, Colorado, Peterson began her career as a singer, where she was scouted by Dick Linke (manager of Andy Griffith), who invited her to New York. In the late 1950s, Peterson and her family quartet landed many stints on the Perry Como Show and the Pat Boone Show. She would later join another group, The Ernie Mariani Trio, and toured for several years, with stints in resort areas such as Las Vegas, Lake Tahoe, and Reno.

While on tour, Peterson was discovered by The Andy Griffith Show director Bob Sweeny and producer Aaron Ruben.
