original plot or not, the original material, characters, setting, all that jazz, is still copyrighted

yes, I know what Fan Fiction is. But, there is a Fan Fiction site with original stories and characters created by the writer and not taken from any other sources a fully original work.

What I am asking is, if someone posted an original ambient amateurish story online could he turn around and get it published or even stolen by another?

I am not saying I would steal it. I am asking b/c I keep hearing people saying not to post original works online or it will get stolen and copyrighted by someone else. I was just curious how likely that could be.

I am actually looking for a writers site to share my stories and not to steal someone elses.
