Netflix broke the hearts of legions of Sense8 fans when it dropped the show after only two seasons, and then announced that not even a fan campaign would help.
Then, a magical thing happened. Netflix had a change of heart, and commissioned a feature-length reunion special to wrap up the lingering story threads from writers the Wachowskis and J. Michael Straczynski.
That momentous turnaround happened nearly a year ago. Now, Netflix's vice president Cindy Holland is coming clean with The Radio Times about why Sense8 was cancelled and then swiftly revived.
As for the former, Holland puts the decision to scrap a third season down to "audience size and budget" — the show simply didn't entice enough viewers to support its high production cost.
"At some point if you don't have the viewership showing up to justify the expense of the series, you're going to want to end it," she explained.
Yet, Holland stresses that Netflix is fully behind the forthcoming Sense8 because the streaming giant's braintrust think it will give hardcore fans the closure they've been clamouring for. We're really pleased to provide an ending for Sense8," Holland said. "For us, I still take those decisions [to cancel] very seriously when we're making them.
"I believe [that Sense8] in particular has a very important message and is a very important series for a lot of fans around the world. We were gratified to see so much fan love, and we were happy to be able to support what I think all the fans around the world will agree is going to be a fantastic, fitting conclusion for it."
