wolverine, sabretooth, wild cat (maverick,) silver fox, kestrel (john wraith,) mastadon... yep. all animals, particularly animals fitting directly or symbolically with their style or mutation. a kestrel's a falcon that can float in place by angling its wings to counter wind currents, similar to wraith's 'watching eye' positioning in combat. mastadon's got brute force, wolverine and sabretooth are vicious and unrelenting, etc.
you got a question for us, will?

No she didnt have scales on her body
After time-travelers returned from their journey, Mystique realized that Prosh himself was the threat that he had warned them about, having been programmed by the Celestials to attack humanity and he set about attacking the team. They fought him off and Toad discovered that the true driving force behind the events had been the Stranger, who had been manipulating everyone for his own gains. The time-travelers quickly realized that the severely-wounded Toad was the key to defeating the Stranger (due to Toad's extensive knowledge of the Stranger's technology). Mystique grudgingly accepted that she'll have to help save Toad if she wanted to escape the situation, so she went with him to Prosh's medical bay and oversaw his care. However, the conduit which provided the cellular regeneration for his body came loose and she was forced to repair it, in spite of the danger to herself, as she was doused by the energy. The result of this was that Toad's mutant potential was fully expressed and Mystique's body was changed by the energy into a naked, scaly, default form. When Mystique tried to save Toad, she too was genetically changed by Prosh's machines. As a result her default state sported scales with slicked back hair. [X-Men Forever #6] Actually, this was done to make her look like in the successful movie adaption of the X-Men. It is unknown whether the scaly state is still her default form and Mystique only shapeshifts into her old template because she likes it more.

I think I read somehwhere that this was done because of how popluar her movie look was, even in X-Men Evolution she was supposed to be nude and scaley, but they changed their mind because it was set to air on saturday mornings, instead of it's originally intended saturday night showing.
