I'm a fan of the old style hip hip like Public Enemy, Ice T, BDP, Ice Cube, Master Ace, BD Kane, Cypress Hill among others. The rappers that ment alot to me growing up were Chuck D, Ice T and Cube and mostly KRS-One (i was blown away the first time i heard "blackman in effect"😉. Nowadays the beats and hooks are maybe "better" but the lyrics seem to have taken a nose dive IMHO. There are obviously exceptions as i'm sure you guys will point out. I like creative rappers that go against the grain instead of talking about cars, bi***es, gold, guns and killing. Sure Ice T and Cube were "gangsta rappers" but they also told a story in there ryhmes usually with a moral as well. Ice Cubes "bird in the hand" and Ice T's "midnight" and "escape the killing fields" are prime examples. Anyway as all the old school rappers i mentioned are still alive to my knowledge i'll choose anyone of them as my pick for #1 IMO of course. I'll let you guys continue arguing......peace. 😎

legends in my opinion:

A Tribe Called Quest
Krs- One
Kool G Rap
Public Enemy
Ice Cube
Masta Ace
Big Daddy Kane

and more...

You seem to know your hip hop HockeyHorror, do you know of any original non gangsta rap i could check out?

MF D00m knows more than me...

but just check out this thread 😂

So, by your logic, Jimi Hendrix, Tom Morello, Slash, and Lenny Kravitz all should have been rappers. And Eminem, Brother Ali, Sage Francis, and John Smith, since they're white, all should have been in rock bands...

yeah, and Vanilla Ice should've joined Blink 182.

alright I've finally bothered to read this entire thread...and all i can say is wow.

1st. I want to apologize for the racist remark, it wasn't meant to be a "only blacks can do rap" type message, it was more about getting a grasp on who you are...as in how you portray yourself.

It's one thing to like hip hop it's an entirely different thing to lower the manor in which you speak in order to further fit in with the scene that you hang out in. I've heard enough people in this thread drop "aight dog" and "homie" to realize enough time in this thread could actually lower your intelligence.

I like how Hockey spends the opening 8 pages of the thread saying how much he likes Lloyd Banks and how he keeps asking what people think of him only to say...

Lloyd Banks is less then average. Eminem is above average. Dice u listen to anything else?

at the end of his posts. Didn't he just post ripping me a new ass-hole because of how bad Eminem sucks?? That, MF D00M...is IRONY.

tell me, how are eminems lyrics unique when he bites other rappers such as Masta Ace...you didn't know that did u...so now u know

Please explain. So Masta Ace raps about his screwed up relationship with his mother, his drug addicted wife, and his drug problems. If so...then you're correct....NO, I didn't know that, and can you honestly give me one legitament reason why I would want to know that? k..

and have you ever been to Tower Records or any other place where they sell albums.....****ing filled with underground albums....i dunno i really like the INTELLIGENT, WITTY, UNIQUE style lyrics the underground has to offer....if the mainstream offered that, sure i would listen too

Ever heard of Amoeba Records? yah I've been there once or twice. Mostly there to collect some old school vinyl albums for my friend's birthday, and to further my classic rock collection...but yah, I've been to Tower, Virgin, Amoeba....and a couple of mom n pop type stores that had ALLLL of the underground stuff you guys are discussing....granted I felt out of place in the store.

Exactly Hockey. That didn't make any sense. He talks shit about hip-hop because of it's mainstream artists ( the most "successful" money wise), and then goes and says good music is judged by success. Hahaha, the irony.

and exactly who are you to say that isn't a good song? It's catchy...sure it doesn't have the greatest lyrics, but what it lacks in structure, it makes up for with an EXTREMELY catchy beat. ANY popular Southern California (or probably US) night club has had that song spinning night in and night out. It's not a song I personally care to defend, but it is very successful song. Who are you to say what good music is and isn't? Anyone with atleast a half way decent high school education would know that it's all up to PERSONAL PREFERENCE. Why do the likes of you and HH sit here and try to tell people what good music is or isn't? Who made you the authority on the subject? Do you get paid to tell people what they should think about music? Thanks...

Underground artists, though I know little about them, are professional musicians none-the-less. They don't flip burgers and fries during the day and rap in their off time. You talk as if being an underground artist is actually better than being mainstream. When you do something for a living (like rapping) you don't do it "for the love of the music" you do it for the money. Some people require less money than others, so in that respect, maybe being less of a financial success as an underground artist is acceptable, as long as it still pays the bills. Besides, I'm sure there are LOTS of underground artists that make a DAMN good living doing what they do. But what I'm seeing you do is talk sh!t on mainstream.....basically just because it is main stream.

In that regard...

You....try....too....hard.

ever heard of PAST OPINIONS! 😆

do you know how ****ing old this thread is.

congratulations you are a loser for reading all those posts 😆

that's about the typical answer I would expect from a little high school kid.

Grow up hockey, you're the one saying how much you like Lloyd Banks one minute and says he's less than average the next.

calling me names...only proves that you're a much bigger loser than I am. Get a life...

wow, i only called you a loser once and thats because i joke woke up 😂

so you dont think opinions change? now thats interesting...

i heard Lloyd Banks on this remix track....and he had great punchlines....then when his album came out and i heard all the g-unit crap i hated it.

now do u understand opinions?

and srry for calling you loser 😄

thumbup

yah, actually I totally understand. Because I kinda worked in backwards order when it came to Banks.

I don't stay up with hip hop...as i'm sure you could guees. 😄

But I went out and bought his G-Unit produced CD, then decided to try and find some of his other work on KaZaa. I like his mixed stuff and cameo work a lot better than his CD. I can't really complain all tooooo much about the CD, there are some good tracks on it.

Apology MUCH accepted. Good to see we aren't fighting anymore. I came in here to share my opinion (though my opinion apparently sucked...oh well) but also to hear other's opinions.

I know I was saying the whole Genre sucks, but I'd like to omit that whole post...i was in a bad mood. For me, I listen to music in phases. I did my hip hop phase, my punk phase, I just finished my classic rock phase...and now I'm trying to dabble in a little bit of everything modern.

So i'm here to learn...more than teach.

ok.

i dunno what to recommend. most people like groups such as

CunninLynguists
Jedi Mind Tricks

try these 2 for a start. if u want more just check other artists in the hip hop thread.

i dont like gangster hip hop much...
but if u like the gangster hip hop scene then just watch t.v and radio 😂

alright i g2g go to work. bye guyz.

i hate the gangsta hip hop scene, it's pretty much why I created the opinion that the whole genre sucks...which was unfair.

I just want to hear someone rap about something other than banging
b!tches, drinking 40oz, and their bling bling. 🙄

well....i dunno about the banging b!tches part...i'm always down to hear a couple of well stung together lines about that. 😉

😂

then check out the underground hip hop scene. they rap about different things.

k i g2g bye guyz

After being turned onto Immortal Technique by HockeyHorror (puruvian cocaine, what a tune), i'd have to say that he could well be on the way to restoring my faith in intelligent, thoughtful and meaningful hip hop. His album is being shipped over to me as i write this and i cant wait to hear what else this guy has got to say. With a few exceptions i thought hip hop was on the decline with all the gangsta crap out there at the moment, thanks for restoring my faith HH.

koolruningz, get Blackalicious. they are awesome. Gift of Gab is an insane MC who has thought provoking lyrics.

Cheers mate, i'll check them to. This is certaintly a useful thread for me.

Immortal Technique is great but Blackalicious are better. ✅

Didn't Blackalicious start up in like San Diego or something like that? I went down to SD's Gas Lamp District to party one weekend, and they were playing in some big local club and it pretty much emptied all the hotties out of the Gas Lamp...🙁
