The Matrix: Ride of the Ennead
Azrael ran. He ran as he had three times before, and he ran from the same thing he had ran from three times before. An agent. Who had cocked up the mission, he didn’t know. It should have been a simple jack in, take a few documents from a poorly defended police station, jack out. Azrael and his partner Kaeo had just been retrieving the files when a team of SWAT had burst in. Behind the rebels had been a large window which they had leapt from, separating as they hit the ground three floors down. Then the agents attacked. Three of them burst out from the station, two following Kaeo, and the other following Azrael. So he ran.
The buildings loomed large on either side of him as he ran. He whipped his cell phone out, and dialled the operator,
“Operator.” A familiar voice answered.
”Get me an exit!” Azrael spoke bluntly into the phone
“Okay…” The voice paused, and Azrael could hear fast typing, “Take the next left, there’s a fire escape, get up that onto the roof. Call back then.”
Azrael did as instructed, taking the left. He was in a dark alleyway, and he could see the outline of a ladder hanging about 12 feet off the ground. Behind him a section of the wall exploded as the agent tried to take him down as he rounded the corner. Azrael sprung off his leading foot, soaring into the air. He slammed into the ladder and began climbing. When he reached the top of the ladder, he sprinted up the stairs, reaching the roof in a matter of moments. . Ahead of him an old man was talking to some pigeons that had settled by him.
The man began to shake, and Azrael swerved to avoid the agent in front of him. He ran for the edge of the building, his nerves tensed for the sound of a shot. And he jumped, knees bent, arms outstretched to either side, virtually flying across the gap. He risked a look back, and saw the agent follow him, jumping so high as to smash the concrete roof he landed on. As he leapt across the next street Azrael’s phone began ringing. He reached into the pocket of his trenchcoat as he landed and answered it.
“Ahead of you is a door, go through it.” Azrael threw himself at the door shoulder first and it burst open, swinging shut again with a bang. He was on a large square spiral staircase with a large gap down the middle. “Down two flights, along to room 307 – there’s your exit.”
He jumped as the agent kicked open the door, falling the two storeys onto the balcony by the corridor. Suddenly a phone started ringing, Azrael followed the sound and shouldered open the door of room 307. On the round table in front of him a phone was ringing. He picked it up and placed it to his ear just as the agent;s first shot hit him in the arm. The rest of the bullets hit nothing, Azrael was back in the real world.
