I haven't seen many of the newer musicals, but my favorite has always been Les Miserables. That's one musical no one could exactly call "sappy" (except for the love story sub-plot, but I always skip those bits anyway).
Cats, The Sound of Music, select G&S plays (and a few other musicals I can't think of right now) are pretty good, too.
right, from the top....
1 Blood Brothers... Willy Russell's finest work, by turns humourous, dark and touching... without giving away the plot, this is probably going to make you cry...
2 The Happiness of the Katakuris... a tragedy, a bizarre death or three... and a song and dance to put it all right...
3 Oliver! need I say more....
4 The Rocky Horror Show... this can be watched and enjoyed on so many levels... a fun evening out, a pastiche of 1950s sci fi, or a learned and deep study of what individual freedom and the pursuit of happiness really means...
5 Chess... by the boys from ABBA... cos I just love a good love story..
6 Miss Saigon... the best modernisation of Madame Butterfly ever...
7 Bugsy Malone... the splurge guns are worth the admission price alone...
8 Tommy... more of an opera, I know, but the Who's magnum opus deserves a mention...
9 tell me on a Sunday... especially with Denise van Outen... remember, it doesn't matter if... he's married....
10 Niggle... my own, never to be performe d musical version of Tolkien's greatest story... "Leaf by Niggle.."

Wow most people never heard of this musical! I liked it but not one of my favorites
i love well musicals that are well done. the more original the better.
here's sum of my faves...
MOULIN ROUGE: a break through in the modern musical. extremely
clever with the composistion, as well as adding a nice
twist to the classic story of forbiden luv.
CHICAGO: the movie version is great and perhaps there has never
been a more charismatic character than that of Billy Flinn.
LES MISERABLE: this is simply great story which i find quite tear
jerking.
FIDDLER ON THE ROOF: come on, who could not love a character like
Tevye or forget a song like 'Rich Man?'
CATS: who could of imagined that this idea would ever of worked? All
of Andrew Lloyd Webber's work, seems to have the same vibe.
