That' s the point. Lots of movies are missing a good story line as well as a plot. Imo, a lot of movies are like this:
good guys vs. the bad guys
an element that connects the two together
good guys must destroy the bad guys and save the world (or save something on a smaller scale than the world)
Most of the story lines are so predictable as they possibly can be. But depending on the way one builds on this foundation, the way one gives the story a twist, the right casting, special effects, ... it still can become a decent movie.
So the question is. What has a good story line to be like?
Imo, Gladiator' s story line wasn' t a revolution but the acting was great and the set overwhelming.
And speaking of unexpected plots. I think The sixth sense is worth it to be mentioned. And I also kinda liked Memento and Mulholland Drive.
I think it' s hard finding something that still can surprise us completely.
