i can say the dark language that is on the ring...... that is the only thing i can speak in elvish!

THAt is no elvish but black speech and has nothing to do with elves but was invented by sauron though it probably has its roots in Adûnaic and Valarin which influenced elvish (or the other way round)

we really need a thread like "ask exa" or something...because you should ask exa, she probably knows

😛
I do not think you need an "ask exa"-thread, here are many people that know some elvish; but it WOULD be practical to stop the always incoming new threads and instead use ONE thread...

sO, iTs pRoNounCed as in tHe wOrd - "taRi"??

lIke in nOrmal eNglisH lanGuaGE?

No, not like normal english... do you know some Latin? Or Italian? Or perhaps German? Try to speak the vowels that way... or, with English examples, the "á" somhow like in "father" and the "i" a bit shorter than in "machine", but not like a in "cat" or i in "bite" (instead like "bit"😉, thats wrong. The consonants are somehow like in English but try to speak no American but rather and British (or the best would be Italian) r. T has to be voiceless, but not aspirated
I'd rather translate Michelle as "Manveri" because it's the female form of Michael which comes from Hebrew "Mi kha-'el?" - that means "Who is like God".

hey can someone tell me how to say my name in elvish? my name is Nikita? and my friends wanna know how to say there names, shina, and tanya...thanks! and if u do know how to say my name how do u know? can u teach me?

To translate a name, there are two different ways; either you translate it like you would do in European languages where many countries know the same names (like, for example, English "Mary", German "Maria", French "Marie" and so on), but of course there are no such names in Elvish, so you can try to adapt the phonological structure to elvish - which in this case would simply be María or perhaps Meri. Or, the more complicated and imo better way is to translate the original meaning of the name - you need some name dictionary to find the meaning (there are tons of those available online, but it's good to compare some to see if there are differences) and than you can translate this meaning to elvish and change the form a bit so that it also sounds like a name (male or female).
The problem is that the sources are often not sure what names mean, especially for common names like - well, like Mary for example 😉
Some say it's "the bitter" or "bitterness", some say it means "stiff-necked", some say it's "the star of the morning", some say it could also be Gaelic "friend" (Marie)... So cou can translate for example [Sindarin] mellon (friend), tarlancwen, tarias, Aurél, or Quenya Sárie, Nilde, whatever.

Nikita comes from greek and means "unconquerable", so would be Úmátime in Quenya;
Shina - if that's the same as Sheena, it would be Eruantale or Eruntale
Tanya - its said to mean "fairy queen", so perhaps Inwitári?

@ahaetrkarykl: yeees you are absolutely right but nobody ever seems to differ between language and writing... I think it's impossible to actually speak good Sindarin. You can learn all the known words (which are very many) and the grammar but there are still so many things missing that it's practically impossible.
íf people say they can speak elvish they most probably mean that they can write a bit and learned some three or four phrases by heart and well thats it 😉

ic Taoia the doc. u sent me was not elfish 🙁 but i wrote you name down and i`ll scan it to you allrighty?

ya im not the best at reading it off text like that i can only read and write the real writing... by the way what would my name be ?? my name is Melani tho im not good at finding my name in elfish plzzz

Melani? The name comes from Greek and means "dark(haired)" or something like that, right? So Sindarin would be Morwen, Quenya Morque, Mornie or something similar.

I ordered this book 8 months ago that has the languages in it.I still haven't got it yet. They said that it hasn't been printed yet.

Which book do you mean...?

Languages of middle earth by tolkien

Black Speech !?!?! where!??!

What black speech? We were talking about the ring inscription... the only other black speech given by tolkien is some orcish curse

Who wrote that book? I've never heard of it before

Ruth S. Noel

Hey cool, thank you 🙂 I think I'll also look for that book
