Sasuke and the Magical Eye was a horrible era, but the series pretty much reached its apex shit level once Madara fused with Obito, or whatever.
What should of happened, is that after Pein and Itachi's deaths, Naruto should have gone on to become the hero Konoha deserved, which he did, and Sasuke should have become a less unstable but still evil dude, which he... kinda/sorta but not really did.
The Shinobi War should have started, Sasuke arrives and helps Naruto defeat Obito, then fatally wounds Obito in mid-talk no jutsu and steals one of his magical eyes to become super powerful. Sasuke declares that he's going to take over the World and make it a better place, and he and Naruto fight for awhile, long enough for Madara to finish off the 5 Kages and come absorb Obito's other eye, also becoming a hyper badass. Naruto and Sasuke join forces to defeat Madara, Sasuke Vegeta's himself to give Naruto an opening and Naruto obliterates Madara by combining whats left of his power with the chakra channeled from everyone still alive in the vicinity.
Sasuke realizes in his death throes that Naruto's Way of the Ninja is superior because it encourages unity and friendship and other gay shit- he tells Naruto this, apologizes for all the dumb shit he's put the World through and dies telling him that he'll make a fine Hokage.
We get a chapter or two detailing the aftermath of the War and the rebuilding that's going on, glimpses of the future for most of the main characters, and then the story ****ing ends.
