*Ahem* From my fave Tolkien Reference Webpage The Encyclopedia or Arda:
The strange, disfigured creature - some kind of Orc, apparently - who leads the armies of Mordor against Minas Tirith has seen his part in the story expanded immensely. This is Gothmog, the Lieutenant of Morgul, who is mentioned precisely once in the book, and about whom we know practically nothing. Indeed, it's not even clear from the book what kind of creature he is, and there's some debate about this. Some have suggested that he was another one of the Nazgûl, while others prefer to see him as an evil Man. The idea that he was an Orc, as the movie seems to show, is a rather less common suggestion, but there's nothing in the books that would make it impossible.

Strange that only two of the Balrogs really had names... Gothmog and Lungorthin the White, both called "Lord of the Balrogs" 😄ecthelion is not a pimp
he killed five (!) balrogs...
And I thought I knew quite a bit...I found no reference to Lungorthin the White. I humbly bow to your vast knowledge. Ecthelion also killed Gothmog before he himself was slain. But you already knew that... 😄
i spoke to a friend of mine who is wiser than even I in these matters,
he has read the books more than I and for longer...
I brought this up and he said that Gothmog as an orc was a laughable Idea and agreed with me, howver to my utter horror he didn't agree with me that gothy was Kamhul the Nazgul. He said Man, and not neccesaryily a black numenorian like MOS! but I still push for Ringwraith status. But what ever anyone belives -THERE IS NO WAY GOTHMOG IS AN ORC!!!
hm, i rather got the impression that he WAS an orc, or rather something like an orc, though I dunno why... perhaps a man with orcblood or something, but when I think about it he rather sounds like one of the Nazgûl, though I kinda doubt that because of his name. Dunno why but doesnt sound like a Nazgûl.... perhaps because it's sindarin... I cant imagine anyone with a Sindarin name being a nazgûl.
but the credits mention one 'orc lieutenant'
????????????????????????????????????????
either way the films may have interpreted him as an orc...
but 'gothmog' and 'witchking' are played by the same guy!!!
so i don't know what to think...
either way gothy is not an orc in the books...
(and this in no way lessens my love for the films)
