I'm a bit torn by the news of leveling being so fast now, on one hand it's great, you can get your alt up to your friends levels much faster. However, a more nostalgic part of my fondly remembers my first character, that spent months upon months back in 2005 leveling and exploring this vast world and seeing every part of it. Because of this I'll always be much more connected to my original character.

I know exactly how you feel. Which is why its so hard for me to switch my pally over to hord...where my friends are. when they first changed the lvl required for the mounts, i was upset, because not a month before, i received my epic mount on my pally, completeting the crazy awesome quest chain, which i think you can still do, well at least before the shattering. dang it! now you got me all nostalgic!

That being said, I always thought it took way too long to get to end game, then once you get there, there was SO much you had to do, and get to be ready for the real end game experience. and i only did it at 70, i didn't make it to 60 until bc. I remember having to run reg lvl 70 instances a lot to get some decent blues so i could start running heroics, taking weeks to complete. maybe i just sucked lol. but when i did my first kara run, i was hooked. so im glad that they are making it easier to get to that point, though, one might argue that this wont sift through the bad players as well anymore.

i think i am going to run through scholomance, first thing when my account comes back...if it is still there, all this is making me nostalgic.

edit: i said stratholm first, but i meant scholomance

40-60 is great now, there is no downtime, it's just as fast as any level range now, and well faster and more fluid than Outlands leveling by far.

Also, leveling an alt is hardly time consuming now. You could get to 60 in under 30 hours if you wanted to. I do know they lowered the amount of exp needed to level between 70-80, so that should help.

They did, but I just learned that today. It is a very sped-up process. Blizzard kind of wants it that way (Ghostcrawler was on record at one point saying that 1-85 should take about the same time 1-60 took in vanilla). Maybe not ideal, but better for altoholics.

Personally, I'll always be a 1-toon guy so it's not a huge deal for me (though I'm happy about the changes). I had another at 80 for Wrath (and geared out too) but everything takes 2nd billing to my hunter. So everyone can lvl themselves silly with alts. I'll be busy tricking out my hunter at 85, then only bringing another toon up to 85 once I start running out of things to do.

...

Also, there's already plans to have me pet tanking instances on my hunter as we level. Wish me luck, I may need it. My turtle's survivability rivals (and possibly surpasses) "regular" tanks, and I have plenty of experience tanking in this last expansion. Threat will be the issue.

I for one welcome the speed up. Having only a Hunter at cap really restricts me to just ranged DPS for raiding and such. I have already done the vanilla, BC and LK grind. (and as much as I enjoyed it) I don't really want to have to do it again just so I can tank and heal in post game. I have yet to really experience the cata changes, I am going to wait until the actual release and then roll a goblin (experiencing the new leveling for the first time as a new race).

I know what you mean. I remember making alliance characters years ago and being able to switch between wetlands and duskwood and ashenvale and stranglethorn. Now you level up so fast its pretty much impossible to go to those different zones without winding up with green or gray quests.

but I love what they did with the update. the quests are much more fast paced now and theres no down time at all. It's almost like a sequel to the original and its completely free

Apart from the subscription fee. 😛

Is there a way to still access the pre Cataclysm content?

Nope, it's all gone. The changed zones are all there is now.

Why not just release a sequel instead like Guild Wars, or even have some servers dedicated to the old WoW setup? Can't say I'm a fan of the design choice. Expansions shouldn't overwrite preexisting content imo, they should solely add to it.

Sequels to subscription-based MMOs are really tricky from a marketing perspective. GW only has the option because it has no such fee.

Lineage, as big as they come without being WoW, tried a sequel and it failed.

Well perhaps, but I'd still rather they at least present some means to access the old content. Obviously not everyone cared much for the storyline but as someone who did and didn't get to experience large amounts of the stuff that has now been overwritten, I'd rather the world would have just remained the same.

The quality of the new-old world is objectively better. The storytelling, the quest flow, the graphics, sound and art, it's all an improvement by a pretty significant degree. The world and the design philosophy was, after all, 6 years old. And it felt it. The old world merely had a nostalgic quality to it, which the designers actually use to produce payoffs in quests and areas in general that otherwise wouldn't be possible.

However, your complaint isn't particularly unique or new and I wouldn't be too surprised if sometime down the road Blizzard does offer servers that do have the old content available. They've just said they have no plans at the time.

And Cata just got released down under. Too bad I can't buy it today cuz I'm out of town. 😬

So far, fun times. Have only been in Vashj'ir for about a level and a half, but it's been a smooth experience so far.

Hyjal was a madhouse last night at midnight. Pretty much the entire server tried to go there at once. The first quest hub was pretty much covered in corpses of elementals and players standing around trying to find one to kill, but it's smoothed out since then. I'm now in deepholm and so far it seems like a solid zone.

I logged into my account managment page, and found a seven day free gametime waiting for me,.so I activated it and have been running around looking at the changed world and doing quests (I had Loremaster before, and every other quest achievment, so now I gotta get rid of all the new ones). So far it's pretty fun, so I will probably get Cataclysm sometime down the road.

However I am also hoping for a free migration from Dunemaul, as my friends are no longer playing, but I got RL friends playing on the Xavius server.

I must say, leveling has become MUCH easier with the shattering. Some of the new quests are absolutely ridiculous. "Walk two metres to this person and get 4000 xp" FTW. 😄

Got my mage to 85.

Haven't done many of the dungeons, but have done most of the new zones.

Thus far Twilight Highlands was the highlight. Awesome intro to the zone, which is something pretty much all the zones have had, but the one for Twilight Highlands is by far the most epic. Also the zone has some great little in game cinematics as you progress. Overall it's one of the most enjoyable and storydriven zones in the entire game.

The lowpoint so far was Uldum. Very disappointed in it as I was looking forward to it. But the zone feels very disjointed from the major conflict and narrative of the expansion - it doesn't have much to do with Deathwing and has it's own self contained storyline, but it's not very interesting. The biggest problem with the zone is that there were a lot of quest where you have to go kill a specific named NPC, and doing that right now is borderline impossible. Many of the NPC's had about a dozen people camping their spawn locations. That made progressing through the zone very frustrating. It's very possible that the zone would be a lot more enjoyable in a month from now when people are out of there, but for now it reeks of poor design, as in the other zones the designers found ways around this problem when it came to named mobs for the most part.

Bought Cata yesterday. Was quite surprised when the game automatically started downloading the expansion, without notifying me. The only way I knew I was actually playing Cata was when I opened the create character screen and saw the two new races available. XD

Hunter just dinged. Vash was my personal highlight, just because it was so different. Yet to do any heroics (item level 6 points too low) but I've heard they're actually difficult.

Uldam is the only new area I've not fully quested.

One awesome point of note... I bought the game off a guildie for 1000 in game gold... Hell yeah, no money don the drain for me
