i doubt tolkien meant for elvish names to be either male or in female form as in the romance languages of europe...in some ways elvish names are somewhat similar IMO to the way the plains indians naming convention...

since i don't speak the language the closest similie i could think of would be like: dances with wolves or sitting bull or grey eagle...

those would be the english translation for Lakota or something close to that...

Well, there _are_ specifical endings for names - like -ion, -on, -or, -ndil, -ndur etc are masculine while -wen (cf. welsh), -iel, -el or -e are mostly feminine

but there are also some not-so-clear-but-frequent ones like -il (findegil, carnil, ...)
