Yeah, America surely is the ideal of English fluency.

Indeed. Especially the Deep South.

Psh, forget English.

Everyone should speak American.

See?

I just want to ask something...

Who came up with the idea of having black lightsabers? They show up in fandom ALL THE TIME, and yet it is a terrible idea.

Idiots.

That's who.

Have to agree.

Same rough mentality that brings about Grey Jedi and emerald lightning and all that bilge.

But I really just can't comprehend it. My main question is 'Why?' Who ever thought that any of it would be considered good by anyone?

Well, a lot of people DO like that stuff, which is in part the problem. On the one hand, each to his own, sure, but there are other issues about basic narrative quality over what just seems cool, and about paying respect to the source material.

What are Grey Jedi and Emerald Lightning?

Emerald lightning is some super-powered version of Force Lightning that was doing the rounds for a while.

Grey Jedi is this whole painful concept of Jedi that are... well, neither Light nor Dark, not evil like the Dark Side but nor caught up in the rules and regulations of the Jedi, and so they can use dark powers for good if they want etc. Pure adolescent wish fulfillment. Part of the whole "I don't play by anybody's rules" vibe.

Unfortunately much of the source material gets tossed aside when it comes to the Expanded Universe. It seems particularly bad for events following Return of the Jedi, for some reason... maybe (since I believe ROTJ is your least favorite, Ush) they got left off on a lesser note? It just seems to me like more recent works revolving around the PT era or earlier are less ridiculous.

Furthermore on the Emerald Lightning... basically only Luke used it. Changing the color made it a good guy thing, apparently.

Do you guys like any of the EU stuff?

There are things I like, yeah. I'm quite a big fan of the Knights of the Old Republic comic book series, actually. They handle it very well. I liked the original Jedi Knight game, too, and the Thrawn Trilogy.

We're happy enough to pick and choose reasonable EU stuff for the games, which pretty much answers that question.

Key word is reasonable.

Basically, we're trying to respect the spirit of the movies, so as long as an EU concept does the same we may adopt it. Trouble is that weeds out a great deal of EU, where things simply seem to be insultingly overpowered or contradicting basic ideas set down in the movies.

The intended threat of the Death Stars loses a lot of meaning when there are other superweapons cruising around with the power to destroy entire solar systems.

I wonder if the post-RotJ books are like that because they felt the need to outdo the trilogy? It seems like the few PT-era books I've read have been more about fitting in with the established Galaxy than playing one-up with existing material.

I meant is there any series or particularly story you guys specifically actually like and think is good and if so like what?

I tend to like a lot of the PT-era stuff. It fits better with the actual canon and it is my favorite SW era. It also doesn't have a lot of the ridiculous trash that people like to pull in from the EU that is very prevalent in the post-OT era stuff.

I also like the Thrawn trilogy even though it has long since been thoroughly tromped and everything in it contradicted by canon in the PT movies, and the clone thing at the end was just annoying. As were ysalamiri. However, it was also the first EU I ever read and it is decent, so yeah.

However, do not get me started on the NJO. Just don't.
