im not taking a side in the argument, this is just my opinion. i dont really care what his true intentions were, it never really occurred to me that he was "selling out". he was still on par lyrically with his other albums, and he had a bigger presence on the mic than i felt he ever had before.EDIT: im talkin about the eminem show, i agree he did sell out on encore
Lyrically on par with what? Unless you are actually insane enough to believe the lyrics on that were anywhere close to the lyrics on The Slim Shady LP. You're entitled to think such, naturally, I just don't see how anyone can believe that.
Cliche, trite, boring lyrics that consisted of him either praising himself (because face it, by then, nobody credible was) or talking about things that every single human on Earth could "relate" to. This doesn't mean he's a touching lyricist, it means he's good at repackaging something already done a million times before, and selling it back to people who are stupid enough to like it.
Like Sing for the Moment, in which he sings about kids connecting with the music, big deal. Third major album in, I don't need to continually hear about Kim or his kid. Moreover, I certainly don't respect him for acting like he was still this beast of a battle rhymer, only to dodge Canibus and then diss him on The Eminem Show, then turn tail and run when he realised all the kids would never bother looking into who actually topped who there, and just assume he did the damage. Especially considering most of what he said to Canibus was said by LL Cool J previously (who arguably did better against Canibus than Eminem did.).
He was pushing a product he didn't believe in. Fair enough, it's his music and he doesn't owe it to anyone not to sell out (which he did long before Encore, he did that post-The Real Slim Shady), but then nobody owes it to him to keep supporting his crappy downward spiral.
Nothing he said on that album was anything other than him trying to convince himself that he was still one of the best, and nobody worth their salt fell for it. The beats on The Slim Shady LP were not poppy by his second, third and fourth major release standards. They were catchy in places, sure, but even the funnier songs were dark, cleverly constructed and even disturbing in places. He had the perfect mix of great music (because there is some good musical work on it that isn't touched on his other albums), great lyrics and great subjects to talk about.
The Marshall Mathers LP was him trying to be controversial because he knew he could raise eyebrows, The Eminem Show was him becoming a self-parody and nothing more than a vehicle for him to delude both himself and Dre also, into thinking that they were still the be all and end all of mainstream hip hop (Dre being more concerned about dissing Jermaine Dupri than realising he was above that) and as for Encore, well...no excuses. Total, utter garbage.
