well, there are truly messed up secret societies that have very high influence in politics, specifically, Opus Dei, the Christian Coalition, the Unification Church/Moonies, Project For a New American Century, Western hemisphere institute for security cooperation/school of the americas, the chicago boys, and Yakuza.
there are a few which are mostly social clubs for morons, such as the promise keepers, john birch society, skull and bones, and the illuminati.

The Freemasons are the result of the three knight group merge in the late 16th century.
