Now onto Cuelemans...THAT was the tosser that scored the winner in the Heysel Stadium in '81 that eventually dumped us out of Espana '82...after Frank Stapleton's perfectly good goal was disallowed in the first half...
The ref was portuguese 😂
Take a look:
"BELGIUM 1-0 IRELAND
Going into their firth game of the 82' World Cup qualifying campaign Ireland had picked up seven points and were in with a good chance of one of the two qualifying places. The match with Belgium was a match for the Irish who gave only the second cap to goalkeeper Seamus McDonagh.
Ireland seemed to have got off to the perfect start when a Liam Brady free-kick was met by a Frank Stapleton shot that beat Belgian keeper Michel Preud'homme. Controversially though the Portuguese referee disallowed the goal and instead gave a fee out to Belgium. Worse was to follow for Ireland when the referee, Nazare, gave the home side a free-kick in a dangerous position after Eric Gerets had taken a dive just outside the box. In the resulting free-kick Rene Vandereycken hit the Irish crossbar before the rebound fell to Jan Ceulemans to head the winner for Belgium. The Irish could feel very hard done by after the match with a result that in the end robbed them of a place in the World Cup finals in Spain.
