JKR talked about him on her website, or rather announced that there was going to be a character with that name. I thought that he would be the new DDA teacher, but that was before I knew about this Felix fellow. Who knows.

You are right, muse. If Fudge is killed it will be a huge wake-up call for the wizarding community. They will begin to realize that Harry's account of Voldemort's return is true and they will begin to prepare for war.
If Fudge isn't killed he may resign because he knows he was wrong to ignore the signs and also because he knows that, even though he loves the power that comes with his job, he won't be able to maintain support from and lead the wizarding community.
I also believe that the fact that Lucius Malfoy was one of the Death Eaters in the battle at the Ministry of Magic will play a part in Fudge's death or resignation. Fudge got a lot of financial support from the Malfoys and now Fudge has lost money and the trust of the people.

He could very well be forced into quitting, because people know that he had been lying to them for a year about voldemort being back. I think thats what will most likely happen, he won't have any choice but to step down. By the way - When is JKR going to update her site??! I can't believe the lack of information we've been getting

Yes, I have read ALL the books and I absolutely think Fudge would resign if he had to. Fudge greatly values his position in the ministry, but I think he would not hesitate to relinquish his power if his life or his reputation were in jeopardy.
After the incident in the Department of Mysteries, Fudge knows it is only a matter of time before the public will turn against him. He has probably been taking bribes from Lucius Malfoy and been blatently ignoring all signs that Voldemort has returned. When, and if, the public realizes how Fudge was misleading them, they will want to crucify him.
I think resignation is the easiest way out for Fudge, because if anyone questions his leaving, he could easily say that Dumbledore and his supporters forced him out of office. Fudge's fall from grace in the ministry will be the final reality check before the major battles start.
Fudge could very well be killed, but I don't think Jo will kill him off because if she did it would only create sympathy for him. It would be much more justifiable to make Fudge suffer and let the wizarding world see him for what he really is.
