Good and valid point HH. However, it's like.....is a song about one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively better than a song about how hard it was coming up from the streets? Although most MC's tell an old, cliched, played-out version of the rags to riches story, some MC's do it honestly and do it well and there are MC's who I consider poets. But compare the two subject matters and I think you know the answer.

MF Doom isn't right in anything when he comes along swearing at you for rightly debating with him, at all. He asks me to post a list of names I consider Hiphop. I do so. He knows they are great so he plays the angle that I just say em coz they're known to be great. Then he says "But they aren't Hiphop's best anyway when it comes to writing." When I never implied they were, just that they were people I decreed were Hiphop. Then when I ask him in a civilised manner to decipher the lyric I posted and give me his interpretation of it (coz there is one main and prolific theme) he chose to dodge it, coz he doesn't understand them. Then he goes and says we all have it in for him coz he disagrees. Disagreeing is what debates are all about and I've been in many of em. I don't have it in for him. I came at him with genuine and civilised debate material and he starts getting hostile. So please look carefully at who the "haters" are.

You said you needed examples? You get it all the time. 50 Cent, Jay-Z, Eminem, Nelly, Biggie, 2Pac, DMX, Wu-Tang Clan (even these have done it). And before MF Doom goes off and tells me these people are shit or what have you, the only ones I like are Wu-Tang Clan. More specifically Method man.

All of those people/groups, Hockey, have referred to how they had it tough on the streets. There's only so many times I can here "Birthdays was the worst days, now we sip champagne when we thirsty" type tales quite frankly. Like, why? Why do I need to know this? You've got the chance to spread messages worldwide and the best you can come up with is how hard you had it? A kid in Africa may pick up that CD at one of the local shelters they have for people in poverty and think "What the ****? You have/had it tough? Try living here."

The point is, why MCs rhyme about how they had it in the past is beyond me. You've made it big and you're living good, don't use your supposedly deprived past to get people on your side for more money.

Again, NO this is not why I choose Rock over Hiphop lyrics before anyone says it.
