The difference between underground and mainstream isn't the lyrics... Though I promise you will always see a difference in the lyrics. Underground lyrics are almost invariably more intellectual, even if they are talking about violence or something. The difference is just how much publicity it gets. For example, if there are two new guys in the hip hop scene, and one is underground and the other mainstream, the mainstream guy will be advertising his album by doing interviews on TV and such. The underground guy will rely purely on word of mouth to sell his album.
The other thing is, a lot of underground guys diss mainstream rap in their songs ✅
OK, here's the real classifications by LP (me):
1) Is not, or spent a considerable amount of time, on an independant (aka indie) label.
2) Does not get major national radio play
3) Is not seen on MTV
4) Does not seek national success by changing their style or lyrics to be more pop friendly
To me, its basically the same things that go with being an indie rocker.
