Kind of begs the question, if you were familiar with the subject, were you expecting to be entertained in the first place, by watching the suffering of one man? I wouldn't have been, unless I were a masochist or snuff fan.
Besides, those who claim the movie was nothing more than mainstream snuff are usually A) not Christians, B) disliked the movie in general and don't have qualms about disrespecting it, or C) totally oblivious and/or ignorant.
"Passion of the Christ" didn't preach. It reminded. It was as visceral a documentation of the last days of Christ as pretty much anyone could assemble. It had a much more rich story than "some guy getting whipped". The movie depicted how Christ died for everyone, yes, even non-believers, and all the shit he went through for us and our bullheaded actions. Unjustly persecuted, but he took it up for us anyway. This movie is a grim reminder of what someone endured for us out of pure love, regardless if you "believe" or not.
It's fine to dislike a movie, but don't complain about not being entertained if you knew what you were getting yourself into. The word "passion" is right there, and when used in it's original context, it means suffering.
..and that's what the movie is about. Suffering isn't entertainment.
