you forget that the term "hero" all depends on who is giving the title. Vigilante is fairly obvious, but for someone to be a hero, it all depends on the person calling them the hero. I mean, to a kid in need of blood after a wreck, a donor would be a hero to him. And to someone who kills a serial killer, the killer's family would think of him as a villain.
Times were changing, and those were indeed dark times. People easily look back on those actions now and say how horrible they were, but at the time there were a LOT of supporters for "haters". Don't get me wrong, im not racist in the least, but chances are most of us (being white) would have been against the civilrights movement.... a scary thought, but most likely true, nonetheless.
