AUTHOR'S REPLY-----Finally.....my 10,000th post!!! 😄
Harry sprinted as fast as he can, until...
...and enormous BOOM was heard. Snape flung both of them to the ground. Harry cursed at Snape, but all sense were lost asthe sky turned white. A huge wave of force hit them, and was followed by a wave of water from the lake, drenching them to the bone.
They both stood up as the brillance of light and cacphony of sound ended. Harry realised that if they had kept running, he and Snape would have been blasted away by the huge wall of air.
"Thanks." Harry said quietly.
"Seemed like the right thing to do at the time, Potter." Snape said grimly.
They both peered at the remainder of the lake. It had been deprived of at least half of its water. Harry saw the carcass of the giant squid, thought about all the occupants of the lake(especially the merpeople), and felt a deep sense of regret.
"We'd better get back,." Harry said, taking a final look around. "Where's Professor Dumbledore?"
"I don't know, Potter...wait, that may be him now."
Sure enough, their headmaster came to a wobbly halt with Harry's broom, his wand held in his other hand.
"Severus, inform all Order members to come to Hogwarts immediately. I will head to the Ministry of Magic right this moment. Tell Minerva to stand by and get everyone back to Hogwarts."
"Yes, headmaster." Snape said.
Dumbledore gave Harry his broom back.
"Harry, go to my office. You know the password, you know where to go. Once the rest of the Order has been alerted, they will be with you shortly. If possible, contact all of last year's DA and bring them along."
Harry nodded. Dumbledore strode off towards the boundaries of the Hogwarts Grounds, so that he could Apparate to the Ministry.
Without a moment's hesitation, Snape set off at a fast stride towards the castle, Harry jogging to keep up.
"What's the "DA", Potter?" Snape asked.
"Dumbledore's Army," Harry puffed. "A defence group last year. We made it because of Umbridge, but we were caught after a few months and Professor Dumbledore had to run. Didn't Professors Dumbledore or McGonagall tell you?"
"Apparently they neglected to give me the full details, all I heard was that the headmaster was cornered by the ministry on some crackpot charge and he had to run," Snape snorted, his lip curling in mockery of the former High Inquisitor. "Well, Potter, at least you deserve some credit, having managed to elude Dolores Umbridge for such a long time."
"Thanks." Harry said, slightly suprised. Since when did Snape ever pay him a compliment? Maybe they just shared the same dislike for Umbridge.
If Malfoy had started being nice and Hermione being unintelligent, it would have seemed to Harry as if the entire world had turned upside down on him.
"How far have you progressed in defending yourselves, and how many members?" Snape continued.
"Well, we've pretty much got all the Hogwarts houses involved except Slytherin, and so far we just perfected the Marathian Sword-Charm."
"That far already, Potter?" Snape asked, suprised despite himself.
"With a little help from Professor Dumbledore, yes sir."
"Well, we'll need it more than ever before. I think the Dark Lord will be playing his best card very soon. To have that many skilled on our side could prove to be a valuable asset."
Harry was still torn between bewilderment, pleasure, and nervousness. Why had Snape suddenly stopped hating him so much?
He and Snape met Professor McGonagall, wand in hand and looking very agitated. Snape relayed Dumbledore's instructions, and left right after to alert the rest of the Order of the Phoenix.
"You come with me, Potter." McGonagall said, jerking her thumb towards the opposite end of the hall. "Mr. Weasley and Miss Granger refused to leave to safety without you.
"I would have done the same for them." Harry said.
"And I believe you, Potter." she gave him one of her rare smiles. "Friendship is an important thing indeed."
Sure enough, Harry saw his two best friends in the great hall. Hermione was sitting with her head in her arms, and Ron was grinding his teeth and pacing the floor rapidly.
"I'm here." he called to them, shouldering his Firebolt.
Hermione dashed to him and hugged him.
"Hermione!"
Ron was nearly faint with relief also. He embraced Harry roughly and patted his shoulder, as if making sure Harry was all right.
"Thank the fates you're O.K., mate." he said shakily. "When we heard the explosion, we thought - I mean, we thought..."
He broke off, and Harry did not need to ask to know what Ron was going to say. Behind them, Harry heard a hearty sniff, and supressed a smile; Professor McGonagall may be bland, and strict, but she still was soft-hearted sometimes.
"I'm OK." he reassured them both, then snapped back to abruptness. "We need to get everyone back to Hogwarts. Everyone from last year's DA are to go up to Dumbledore's office with me."
"But why?" Ron asked, perplexed.
"I don't know," Harry said quickly. "But that's what Dumbledore told me to do, and I suppose we'll do what he says. he's always been sensible."
"Right." said Hermione, sufficiently recovered. "Professor, should we help you in getting everyone back or should we go up to Professor Dumbledore's office?"
"Don't worry, Miss Granger - I will get everyone back as soon as possible. I told them all to go to the Ministry of Magic, but they won't be so pleased."
"I'll stay, I need to find the others." Harry said abruptly. "Ron, you and Hermione go up to Dumbledore's office, the password's Chocolate Frog."
"Right." Ron said. Harry was in command somehow.
