Harry dashed back to his friends.
People were starting to notice for the first time, and Harry saw that many were nearly speechless.
If Ron hadn't spotted them, Moody would have noticed too late, Harry thought.
"What are those things?" Seamus asked, pointing at the armoured humanoids with shields and rods.
"Not sure," Harry said grimly. "But I expect we'll find out soon enough."
"They're gremlins." Snape told them. "I've only ever seen one before."
"This is it." Ron muttered.
"We really could've used Wood and his long speeches right about now," Fred said nervously. "They just sucked the fear and nervousness out of you and replaced it with boredom."
George smiled weakly.
Harry gathered them around in some sort of makeshift huddle.
"No matter what happens in the heat of battle, don't stop fighting. We look out for each other during this fight, understand?"
They all said they understood.
"Good." Harry sighed. "It's been good to know you all, to learn with you all. And we'll do our best to see each other again, in more peaceful times."
***
"Don't do anything yet." Snape warned them.
Stripped of their invisibility, the Dark army stopped their silent marching. They roared and banged their weapons on the ground or shields. The horrendous din caused a shudder to flow down Harry's spine.
This is it...no turning back now.
"What're they doing that for?" Ron said nervously.
"To work themselves up into a frenzy, no doubt." Hermione said.
"And probably to try and weaken our resolve." Harry added.
The noise went on, neither side provoking any attacks yet.
Then a ominous thumping was heard. It was accompanied by the stomping of feet of thousands, human or otherwise.
"THEY'RE CHARGING!" Hagrid's voice roared, bringing them all to their toes.
"All right," Snape yelled over the din. "Epicentres at the ready! Cast them when they're entering that dip over there!"
The dark army(more like a tidal wave, Harry thought) poured forward, intent on sweeping the castle and razing it to the ground.
"Cast them! Now!" Snape commanded, raising his own wand.
More than a score of earthquake beams hit the front runners, causing them to lose their footing. The rest behind tripped, and the entire front line slowed down. Harry glanced to his right and saw that the other squads were using different methods of slowing the charge; there were impediment jinxes, trip jinxes, Ice beams to spread the field with a sheet of ice....
"Hit them!" Snape bawled.
Harry dashed to the parapet as did the others, and started raining spells and jinxes upon their would-be beseigers, hitting them with whatever came to mind. Caught up in the moment, Harry's aim flew wild, but with the sheer number of attackers it was hard not to hit something. He saw his Silver Arrow tear straight through the shoulder guard of a gremlin, and causing him to topple.
Hermione immobilzed three at once, and gave Harry a chance to blast them with a dose of magical fire. He had no time to thank her, as she dashed off to assist elsewhere.
"They're getting closer!" Ron bellowed, sending a conjured icicle careening into the chest of another, freezing him.
"Get ready for melee combat if they get on top of the wall!" Deam yelled.
Harry conjured his Marathian sword, and several others did the same.
Then, they found out what the suspicious rods that the gremlins clutched actually did.
A narrow strip of green light narrowly missed Harry's neck; it created a crater in the wall the size of his fist.
