Really? i would've thought that its hip-hop cos thats basically all the american music over here (or crappy nu-metal bands)

Naw. Jazz is the original all american music.

Y'all should check out some Woody Shaw.

jazz is an musical art form that is truly american. hip hop gleans its originality from jazz.

i have grown up listening to jazz my whole life. not sure if you have ever heard of him, but as a child, i would occasionally hang out with saxophonist ronnie laws' children. our parents were friends a long time ago. i grew up listening to his music and his brother hubert. it's not old school jazz, as it is more late seventies and early eighties jazz (fusion).

good times.

donald byrd all day, every day.

what ive noticed ids that the origins of jazz comes from old negro slave folk chanting, praising the lord.

Jazz

Anyone else here into jazz? I love it. Some of my favourite artists are John Coltrane, Miles Davis, and Sarah Vaughan.

I'm not too sure how many people here really like jazz, but it deserves a thread of it's own. I hope there are at least a couple people here who wouldn't mind discussing jazz and stuff. 😛

I like it. You hear about that recording they just found of Telonius Monk and John Coltrane playing together? It's supposedly groundbreaking stuff.. was recorded back in like '57 or some time around then and was just recently discovered by one of Coltrane's family members, I believe.

The only "jazz" i ever got into was Buna Vista Social Club. But thats hipanic jazz...im willing to give some jazz a good listen to, any recommendations?

i still highly recommend BVSC though. 👆

im not a huge fan but the 2 artists i really liked were:

eldar djanginov
art tatum

i love the piano droolio

and jazz/hip hop is great too droolio

Well the obvious choice for a first Jazz album to check out would be Miles Davis - Kind of Blue, if you don't already own it. Any Miles Davis stuff is good to start out with.. pretty easy to follow and accessable to non-jazz fans.. a lot easier to get into than say Ornette Coleman or someone like that.

😱 That's awesome!

Yeah it's awesome but I can't find a damn copy of it anywhere..

Jazz

Despite the lack of replies to my funk thread, I decided to make a thread on jazz too. Jazz is a bit of a more widely recognized genre.

I know there's a couple other jazz fans here at least.. I think Tpt is one and if I remember right D00m is too. To anyone who is already into jazz: what are your favorite artists and albums? What's your favorite type of jazz?

To me.. jazz is the most emotional genre i've ever listened to.. it takes a little bit to get your ears used to the sound.. at first it may just sound like technical rubbish, but once you do get used to it it just sorta clicks. I don't even try to understand the technical aspects of jazz... just the music itself is so soulful and evocative. It's good to escape rock and rap from time to time..

Right now I'm listening to The Mahavishnu Orchestra's album The Inner Mounting Flame. It's actually not a pure jazz band it's fusion but still in basically the same realm of music.

Anyone not familiar with jazz looking for an introduction to the genre.. here's some accessable jazz albums to try:

Miles Davis - Kind Of Blue
Dave Brubeck - Time Out
Charles Mingus - Mingus Ah Um
John Coltrane - My Favorite Things

If this thread fails miserably too.. well at least I tried.

I certainly wouldnt call myself a jazz expert but i do like to listen to it on occasion. I have a couple of Coltrane and Davis albums.
Some of my favourite hip hop tracks are very jazz influenced.

My favorite is probably Ornette Coleman.

My favorite jazz genre is probably free jazz as most of my favorite jazz musicians are from that genre: Coleman, Zorn, Coltrane etc.

Also like the classic Davis and Brubeck stuff.

Great choice.. The Shape Of Jazz To Come is an undeniable classic. I'm not really knowledgable on free jazz as a whole but Coleman and Coltrane's free jazz stuff is top notch.

Take Five is the epitome of cool and a cool song, in my opinion.

Jazz is what I listen to most. I agree with you about it being an emotional genre. I can't explain it exactly but it seems to provide the kind of visceral kick with pure tone alone that rock fails to provide with just sheer volume. My CD collection isn't up to museum quality yet but I have enough to keep from playing the same ones day after day. My first one was Miles Davis' Kind of Blue which still remains a favorite. Some of my other favorites are:

Coleman Hawkins-Night Hawk
Charlie Parker-Studio Chronicle 1940-1948 (box set)
Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers-Moanin'
Lee Morgan-Leeway
Thelonious Monk-Monk's Dream
John Coltrane-Coltrane Plays the Blues
Oscar Peterson-Night Train
Hank Mobley-Workout
Ben Webster-King of the Tenors
Erroll Garner-Body and Soul

I hope this thread keeps going for a while. This was a good idea.

I think everyone starts out with Kind Of Blue. Or they should anyway. It's really the epitome of what 50's jazz is. Art Blakey is really great too, I have his Live at Birdland cd and also Moanin' which I almost mentioned but I decided to keep the list down to 4 albums to avoid scaring away new listeners. The Drum Thunder Suite has got to be one of the coolest and most powerful, hype inducing jazz songs I've ever heard. Classic.

Since you like both T. Monk and Coltrane.. have you heard the new CD they just released of Coltrane with Monk's quartet at Carnagie hall back in the 50's?

I agree completely. When it comes on I really get the image of being in a smokey jazz club in the 50's with a tophat and a cigar.

I'm digesting the new Monk and Coltrane CD now.
Monk was ON that night, its really sweet. Pick it up.
I like some Wayne Shorter, Dizzy, Clifford Brown, Old Louie Armstrong (Hot Five, Hot Seven stuff)

I've heard parts of the Monk/Coltrane Carnegie Hall concert. They almost sound too tight for it to be a live performance, more like a studio recording. "Blue Monk" sounded great. I also like Louie Armstrongs old hot five and seven recordings. I almost listed those amongst my favorite recordings but decided to keep my list short and slightly more modern. The Okeh recordings by Duke Ellington is another old one that I like.
