The problem about telling people to read the books just like that is when they come back to you after the first 100 pages of Fellowship of the Ring and tell you it is the dullest thing they have ever read. You have to convince them that things pick up.
When they are done, they ask why you didn't warn them how dull the LAST 100 pages are...
(BTW, it's not the end of the story that is a problem. It is that the story ends, and then keeps going for 100 pages... as the heroes go home, have a wash, eat dinner, go to bed, get up again etc.)

yeah, I made my mate read them, but warned him that he probably would want to quit reading the book after the first pages but 'it will get better, promise!'. anyways, he's enjoying them now.
but the last 100 pages? I wanted it to go on for hundreds more, just about how they settled themselves after the victory.
