well, I just finished my season 5 rewatch. Earlier episodes are much more intriguing after you've seen the entire season.
I'm still up in the air about Locke. I know the show is trying to lead us all to believe that he's somehow in league with the guy on the beach with Jacob in the first scene of "The Incident"......but I'm just not sure. With Locke skipping around in time by himself at the beginning of the season, he could have skipped to 2007, 3007 and it just hasn't been shown yet.
One thing I'm fairly certain of, Faraday is not dead. He died when Ellie shot him. That is the way his life will end. It just hasn't happened yet. That Faraday that got shot in '77 by Ellie was from the future. When the flashing stopped in '74, Faraday left the island to go to Ann Arbor to work. Sometime in the future, perhaps 1979 or 1984 Faraday will go back in time to 1977 and get shot by Ellie.
The dead give away was when right away, Faraday had Miles drive him to the Orchid. They are sitting in the van and Faraday flips to a page in his journal. He looks up as Dr. Chang arrives. He says, "right on time". He knew Chang was "right on time" because he already knew what time Chang would be there, because he is from the future and has travelled back to 1977.
In season six, Faraday will sacrifice his life. He knows beforehand that he is shot by Ellie in 1977. Sometime in the future he will travel back to 1977 to rile Jack into exploding the bomb, causing the incident. He will do so because he has to. whatever happened, happened. He will know beforehand that by doing this, he will die.........just as both his mom and dad knew that sending him to the island would end in his death in 1977 but guided his whole life to make sure he was on the island in 1977 because they had to.
until the day he goes back in time, there is still a Daniel Faraday in Ann Arbor, MI that could poke his head up into the story at any given time.
some nagging questions that remain:
- how did Sawyer, Miles, Daniel and Juliet join the D.I.? Last we heard they were only supposed to be staying on the island for 2 weeks to look for their salvage ship crew mates.
- How does Widmore know of the upcoming war? He hasn't even been on the island for 20 years....yet he tells Locke of this upcoming war and what Locke must do as soon as he arrives in Tunisia. I'm personally wondering if Widmore has been to the future. When Ben threatened to kill him, he did tell Ben, "we both know you can't kill me". Perhaps he knows this because he knows he's still alive in the future.
- what exactly did Jacob recruit Ilana to do for him? She has already brought Sayid back to the island (very important to '77 since he's single handedly responsible for all the turmoil) and brought Locke's dead body to the Others and dumped it out in front of them.
I'm not completely sold on this but it's an idea I've been kicking around. The first time we see the Others is in the 1950s. There is no mention of a leader at this time. I'm beginning to think that the Others in the 1950s were the original Others. They were people on the island some time in the future dabbling with time travel. They messed something up pretty badly and caused something catostrophic. The entire group were flashed back in time as a means of course correction. Perhaps that is why Widmore and Hawking have both been manipulating people and events. They are both original Others, both from the future and both the parents of 1 important figure. Perhaps we had never heard of a leader before Elloise and Charles because there was none. They took on the responsibility of trying to course correct the future, and their son who've they've manipulated his entire life is the final key to doing so. It could also be that they were both simply younger than everybody else and would therefore live longer and have the best chance for a greater impact.

finally took the time to read your post 😄
I think you're complicating yourself to much with the time-travel... well, it's certainly messy, but I think everything we saw during last season it's exactly how it happened, no more... no less

I think it was pretty clear that the Locke we saw is not the Locke we knew. He is, for all intents and purposes, dead. As we saw when Ilana and Co showed his body. The Locke we saw is no other than Nemesis, Jacob's friend in black we saw talk to him. This is evident when Jacob tells him he finally found his "loop".
Furthermore, not only is UnLocke not Locke, but Nemesis ... and he also is

I think Faraday is indeed dead, and dead he will be. He knew how certain things will happen, because he had the diary... the diary which his mother gave him... His mother who knew his destiny was to die by her own hands...
you know Whatever Happened, Happened.
Faraday didn't know he was going to die, but he finally understood his fate when it was his mother who shot him. He was surprised, but he finally understood his mother was building up all of his life to that very moment, because if it wasn't for Daniel, Jack wouldn't do anything about the bomb, and the whole island would have suffered, so she needed her son to fulfill his destiny... just as simple

they may have proven themselves useful to Dharma... and they still needed an excuse to stay and search for all remaining survivors... if they have found any

Dunno, but he does know about what the Losties will have to do just as Eloise knew

Fight the upcoming war?... it should become clear once we know who Ilana is... and it is already known... 😉

nah. I don't think there was that much timetravel before the Losties'
There was a leader back in the 50's... it was Richard... though it's more than obvious than Richard was there on the Island before many others... including Charles and Eloise who were kids in the 50's
Not even Richard knew about timetravel. Obviously Widmore or Hawking didn't know about it either until they saw Locke... so if you see the grand picture... both of them have been played... they are but pawns in a greater scheme...one that have nothing to do with Widmore or Ben... This is about Jacob and Nemesis (Esau or whatever his real name ends up being). That's what the war is about
I don't know if there were any other leaders before Richard... we don't even know how there are Others in the Island to begin with...
but it would more than likely have to do with The
