I wrote a review on teh DVD's on my site. it, um, caters to what Star Wars fans care about.(It's a satire, pretty much sayign Star Wars fans concern themselves with the superficial.
Things I expected to be changed or corrected that weren't :
1) Those damn tracking boxes around some of the tie fighters. Surely that was a must, and would presumably been a piece of cake to put right??
2) One or two of the closer shots of the death star's surface in ANH during the battle scences. They do still look like something made from model kit filmed in close-up. (which they are). I can live with it, but would liked to have seen that re-done.
3) I honestly thought they would have replaced the rancor in ROTJ with a digital one. Perhaps a little sacreligeous if they had though, but they have at least finally removed the matte lines. So amen for that at least. Also, the colour of the back projection (or was is a composite?) of the rancor when the fat dude is crying over his death seems to have been enhanced making it look less telling now.
Things changed that I dont like....
The addition of those damn green flashes in ANH during the OB1 and Vader fight...grrrrr. Annoying and very distracting. For all his talent there are times when I just want to slap George Lucas with a wet fish.
The change of Anakins apparition at the end of ROTJ. Mixed feelings here...techically the correct thing to do... but hard to swallow for those of us used to seeing it a certain way for all these years.
With George Lucas having autonomy over this series, it's a bit of a mixed blessing. Without it, we may never have seen any improved versions or SE's but if he keeps on tinkering with it and changing bits over and over the whole thing is gonna become a mess and a joke. I'd hate to see that happen. As for the oh-so-serious, overblown, over politial, over complicated and souless prequels...well I just don't care.

I heard about your number one that it is due to compressing the format on the dvd or something that causes the boxes
Don't think so, Y. GL was able to eliminate the box in other areas.
And I agree with those annoying green flashes during the Obi-Wan & Vader fight! What the hell was GL thinkin'? He's really pissin' me off with all these damn changes.
😠
I didn't want them to redo ANYTHING.
I just would have loved a touch-up job on the whole trilogy.
Picture quality is superb, but some effects are now worse.
I hate how Luke's saber jars from light blue to turquoise, almost fully green. And those boxes could have been fixed.
Jeez, five minutes in Photoshop could have solved that, even if it was a blur job on the edges, it would still look better than seeing DEFINITE boxing on the thing.
Also, one problem I have with the special editions, is that they seem half-arsed. The Death Star battle is a prime example of such half-arsery. They go to the bother of having some stunning fly-bys and dogfighting in CGI, and then ruin it by KEEPING some of the worst edits of the battle. When you see what they had redone and what is STILL there, it looks even more jarring and out of place.
There's a severe lack of continuity in the quality of the effects, it should have been all, or nothing.
Oh yeah certainly some of the older effects hold up, in fact some of the better ones should definitely be kept, as a token of the actual successes they managed to achieve considerring the technology and ideas.
I meant all or nothing as in "if you touch up one scene, make bad scenes look better too". They kinda touched up scens that didn't really need touching up. They replaced a dogfighting sequence which may have been a bit slow, between a TIE and an X-Wing, and used CGI instead. It looks superb. But, they didn't bother to redo some of the dodgy fly-bys at all, now they REALLY needed work.
Why is there a CGI Jabba The Hutt, with CGI X-Wings and so on in ANH, when the scene where the deflection tower gets blown up looks like a primitive animatic?
got the DVDs and the t-shirt evenso i noticed little diffrence from the original relase apart from haayden christian and sarlac. but i think the best part was in ESB right at the end when Luke escaped on the Falcon. "Darth Vader looks into the distance at the trail of the Falcon,he steps awaay and then looks back out the window.Their is a close up on Admiral Piett (great man) and he gulps because he thinks hell get the chop but vader just storms off the bridge and Pietts eyes just follow him." i like thi part because it shows vaders compassion in a way
