"SUPPOSEDLY" in the Ultimate edition, that TPM yoda is gettin' replaced with the digital one. And Superfly, they didn't make him digital because it looks better (though I do think it looks damn good) they did it because of what was required of him in the script. Those scenes would be LAME with a puppet. But I have had a creeping fear that he might digitalize the old Yoda. I don't think he will, but I fear the possiblity... 🤨
Actually, seeing ESB again on DVD, the puppet looks outstanding in its acting. The only thing is perhaps his mouth. But the whole acting and movements are very very good. It's quite moving really... I'd hate if GL would change that but I doubt it. That's a costly affair with little to gain. After all, he said the main restriction of puppets was that he was limited in their movements around the set. they don't have any shots for CGI characters moving around the sets with the original actors in it. It was all shot taking the limited movements of the actors in account. Changing that is very very costly and difficult, with little added value.
queeq-- I totally agree with the puppet acting. And now that they're so clear, Yoda looks a lot better. There's a lot more tone. I'm still amazed that way back then they made such a great puppet. He's so expressive. I totally forget he's a puppet. I thought it was funny that Kirshner kept giving direction to Yoda and Frank Oz couldn't even hear him. Seems like everyone just sort of forgets its a puppet. That scene of him yelling "all right, move him right" and all you see is Yoda turn, its like he's an actor on set. Hilarious stuff. But yeah, I really don't think there's a chance he'll ever digitize that Yoda, it would so undermine all that work and struggle to make what ultimately, even by today's standards, is a phenomenal effect.
