I didn't say everyone followed this, but I find it's better to just tell them their haircut/whatever looks good because it doesn't really matter what I think about it, as long as they like it that's good for them. They only ask people how it looks because they like it and want to receive compliments for it most of the time, not saying this applies to everyone but most people don't like to hear that their haircut/sig/dress/etc looks like shit, whether you think it does or not. Now if they persist on having my honest opinion, I'll give it to em. But if they just say "like my new ___" I'll be nice and say yeah.

But whatever, that's great for you if you'd rather lie to them and get the impression there new 'whatever' is amazing.

You missed my point. By saying that they can't improve unless I give them my honest opinion, that implies that my opinion is more valuable than theirs. Opinions can't be right, so there is no way to improve their haircut/sig/whatever. If they like it that's good enough for me.
