i always liked the idea that Han & Chewie were friends, both sort of on the outskirts of society working together making a living however they could. Never heard of Chewie owing Han a life debt, it does seem that Han has a sort of authority position in the relationship but it also seems that they genuinely care about each other and are equal in that respect.

darth vader is a man who SHOULD be dead, but is kept alive by (imho) a combination of cyborg parts and usage of the dark side. i believe that line was put in there as a hint to the effect of the dark side...that through using it, one can cheat death. so perhaps sidious is not deformed, but just a really really really old walking talking breathing corpse...an abomination.through EU and video games we are led to believe just the opposite, that using the darkside is what corrupts the body, so that would lead to the conclusion that the dark side shortens the life span, right? in canon though, we see no proof of this EU darkside corruption theory.
another thought:
anakin in ep6 looks like an old man with horrible battle scars and no hair. other than that, there is NOTHING deformed about him. after 25+ years of being evil...should he not be deformed as well?

as I've said many times before as far as I can see it there are only two possibilities. either palps looks like this all along and is some how concelaling it (darkside or shape changer... take your picxk)
or it happens all of a sudden as result of an event (be it saving anakin or the yoda fight). it's pretty much common knowledge that I favour the shape changer thing. Just because it's not as obvious but yet again I may be looking at this to deeply.
Maybe we should have a poll as to wether it's due to dark side concealment (at al) or shape changing etc. Of course it is possible ILM only put in sam wessel as a shape changer to 'show off' what they could do (although I am sure they could have shown off much better than that if they wanted to!) this leaves us with the conclusion that sam was there as a shape changer for a reason.
But hey I've had too much to drink so maybe I'm just rattling on a bit.

I'm thinking that the change happens due to some as yet unrevealed interaction that Palpatine has with the dark side shortly before the duel with Mace and that the duel with mace is the first time he reveals his new appearance. I don't think he's a shape shifter because he's human and would have to maintain a normal appearance too much to do it through some sort of dark side magic.
Oh yeah, and I think his new red velvet cloak is awesome!
I think he hides his true self from everyone that he is manipulating. Maul and Dooku were just pawns in his game, by the time he gets to the point were he reveals himself to the Jedi....like Maul says....the Sith will have had there revenge. Palps needs to keep up his guard now...the veil of the Dark Side...so the Jedi are not alerted to his identity.
The only dark side corruption I see is the pale look they have. The Emperor and Vader in ROTJ are both a hazy shade of gray. I would love to hear that Palpatine was around in Yoda's youth and that they had a past. The dark side clouds everything, so who knows. He may be hiding his true identity from Yoda alone. He's old, not deformed.
I do believe, however, that his body is now nothing more than a shell full of very powerful dark side energy because it eats away at a persons humanity. This is evident at the amount of dark side energy that is released when Vader throws him down the shaft in ROTJ. I really cool bad guy explanation would be great before the duel between Joda and Palps.
Hi there peeps. I don't know if anyone has broached this before in this thread, but what if the thing was that palpatine looks so old and corrupted and has been hiding his appearance because he is older than Yoda...?
(Bridging the 1000 year gap between the Ep3 present and the last time before TPM that the sith were known to the Jedi...?)
This would explain nicely,beyond the 'darkside being stronger' explaination, how he could whup Yoda in their confrontation...
Palpatine being on the darkside and being older more experienced.
And lets face it. It'd take someone pretty clued up/advanced to pull the wool over the Yoda's eyes for so long. And in these matters , its nearly always the older character who has the savvy/knowhow/experience over the younger...
(Even though the younger finds a way to win in the end like in ROTJ )
Obviously this theory would back up the popular opinion that Palp's Ep1-2 image was a constructed fascade, rather than the opposing 'Gets corrupted' school of thought. And it could explain why Palp's appearance doesn't seem to degrade in the 18-20 years between Ep 3 to Ep 4....
Maybe Yoda simply disrupts his ability to project this which could also back up Rick McCallum's comments on the Yoda/Sidious confrontation... What do you guys think...?

Well, it does degrade a little in that he's hunched over and uses a cane in the OT.
But anyway, I don't think that features like that big crease down the middle of his forehead or the yellow eyes are from just advanced age.
Since he's human, he'd have to be some sort of a vampire or something to be able to stay young looking, but if he was then why wouldn't he keep up the rejuvenation after ROTS? The one-time transformation is a much more simple and sensible explanation, I think.

Maybe Yoda manages to wound his leg with a blow from his lightsaber..? Being shin-height I could envisage this maybe...
I just thought (In regard to the"rejuvenation after ROTS" issue) that
that cunning bit of subterfuge would no longer be neccesary to Palps after gaining control of everything. ( Plus, a scarier looking appearance could be an asset in a regime based on fear...)
Also, one possible explaination about the Vampire-like-youth-appearance-thing could be the darkside being hard to see especially as the Jedi have admitted in AOTC that the Jedi connection to to force was much weaker then... So maybe Palps could decieve them..
None of this is me saying you are wrong, mind you, (just explaining why I would give such credence to a potentially way-off theory... 😉 )

I can't remember if anything official confirms or denys this theory but here goes:
I don't think yoda will cause any permenant ingury to Sidious. In fact he might not even get a chance to do much of anything, bar a bit of lightsaber and force lightning.
I think to show Sidious as this all powerful person who has gained control he must be shown in ROTS to be stronger than anyone. I think of it as Sidious at the hieght of his powers. But I may be on the wrong track.
