Cemetaries/Graveyards: Waste of space?

Started by Alpha Centauri3 pages

Well if graveyards are necessary, there are certainly too many. I've seen cemetaries for every borough. I think there should be a city cemetary and have done with it.

I don't think they are a bad thing, and I can think of worse things the land could be used for, like another petrol station, or some run down housing estate no body lives in. In fact, I think they are kind of nice, peaceful, tranquil. Its ultimately a personal choice, some people like to leave a physical mark on the world, some want to leave a physical reminder for future generations, it might be religious beliefs and so on. Lots of reasons for cemeteries. Personally though I would like to have a pyramid built in my honour. Nothing fancy, just as long as its a big as Giza I'll be happy.

Graveyards and Cemetarie would never be aa waste of space. It where the love ones of the dead can vist there grave. It is also needed.Without it where would we bury them?
So I say no it is not a waste of space and hopfully people will never think that it is.JM

What is this "should" we SHOULD go by our religion, if it says be put in the ground or to be cremated, whatever. theres plenty of space, so cemeteries arent really a waste. Theres so many other things that are a waste of space.

I dont have a problem with cemeteries but i wouldnt want to be burried in one - cremate me! I do think that they will become a waste of space eventually - cos what you going to do when we run out of space for all the freshly dead people? dig up old graves? But that aint gonna happen for ages and until then bury those who want to be burried.

There is, in Australia at least, a growing form of new internment. It is basically an upright, vertical tomb stone and coffin in one, made out of marble, really quite odd, but doesn't seem to require much space at all.

Well i rather be buried where my past ancestors have been buried. Its more to do with tradition then religion for me

i want to be buried into the earth..for religeous reasons

I would like to be burned like the Hindoes.(I am no Hindoe)

I like cementaries, they're beautiful and peaceful. I don't think they are a waste of space at all. And for many people they are a form of closure.

i want to be buried into the earth..for religeous reasons
what religious reason would that be???

Cemetaries make for great landscape art. Draw ina zombie or two, and you got yourself a wonderful fantasy/real life scene.

I don't think so, nor do I think all bodies should be cremated. I've never liked the idea of burning somebody up after they die... Just seems more natural to me to bury them. Seems kinda cheap to burn somebody, like you're trying to get rid of them. Hard to explain it really, I just feel like the earth is the reason we're all alive, and it's more fitting to end up down there so if anything we can end up as fertilizer for the rest of everything 😖

Pretty morbid I know, but it seems like we're disturbing something in the cycle of life and death to not put bodies in the ground, back where they started.

My teacher was saying something about that. Like how when organisms die decomposers absorb nutrients from the dead organism and put it back in the earth, and if every time a creature died it just disappeared than that would be waisting alot of energy and would disrupt the energy cycle. Not that I'm saying select people being cremated puts a big dent in the energy cycle.

The way I see it cremation provides nothing back to the earth. Except contributing to green house gases. Now, I'm not one of those loony left green people who think everyone should give up their car's but it makes sense to at least try and give a little back for the years we spend alive on this earth.
Usually cemeteries are put in out of the way places or on land thats not going to be much use for building on anyway. So all they'd end up using the land for is a bloody car park!
Personally if any sod burns me I'll come back and haunt the buggers!

I think it's useful for relatives and friends of the deceased to be able to have a place of quiet contemplation. Besides once you realise that after 100 years they usually bury another person in that grave anyway (or at least they have the option) you realise that maybe the positive things provided by graveyards far out weigh the negative ones.
Plus on the more humorous side... they are useful as great places to make out, scare your friends when you're young and take your dog if you run out of bones.
Besides sometimes it's nice to know you'll leave a couple of things behind... even if one of them is your own headstone 😐

Wayne...

Graveyards a waste of space?
The space is there, so why not put graves on it?
(sorry, that sounded really immature)

dunno about other countries, but overhere we are obligated to get burried in "holy land", be it cemetaries for christians, or for jews, or for muslims, ...

And it can be good for other reasons, like knwoing when someone died and when they lived, like informational stuff for the future, personally I want to be buried,

I like Graveyards; very nice places, they are.
🙂 Especially around here where there's just green fields in every directions.

Anyway, Forget being buried and Cremation, I'm going to donate My body and brain to science. 😄

That is, if they'll take it.😖

young drivers are the most dangerus drivers in the U.S

i prefere the idea of being buried rather than cremated, i dont have a clue why though, guess i just dont want to be burnt.

ideally, i would be cryogenically(sp) frozen just before i cop it, so that i may live on to yonder ages.
