People, it's JIMI hendrix. Respect the man.
Jimmy Hendrix obviously, but he is not as good a lyrisist as he is a guitar player.
1) See above
2) There aren't many lyricists out there that are as good lyricists as Hendrix was at guitar
3) Lyricism has nothing to do with guitar solos.
4) Some of his best songs were written by other people (All Along The Watchtower was written by Dylan).
5) Listen to Machine Gun.
But Hendrix brought something that neither May nor Clapton could bring to the music; his level of innovation was light years ahead of anyone of his time--or any time. He could play the blues standards well (look at his live work), but then he'd transform it into something wholly his own. It was amazing.

i personally prefered dimebags solo in "the sleep", but then all his solo's are bad ass!
john petrucci (for this example liquid tension experiment) does an awesome, powerful solo in the song kindred spirits, but like dimebag all his solo's are awesome
michael romeo from SymphonyX is a legend on guitar, he doea a great duel solo with the keyboard player in the song "of sins and shadows"
