Me renting Volume Two is doubtful. There's no character development whatsoever, no backstory, nothing. I gave it time too. I couldn't care less what happens to any of the characters.
You learned all this from vol. 1?
Big mistake, my friend. You should give it more time. Honestly, what happens in the first 4 episodes of Bebop?
There's a lot of great back story and character development you haven't gotten to yet. You just scratched the surface.
Take my advice and keep pushing at it. Watch them all and give a verdict.

Alright. Decent? Just wait, my friend. Disc 2 holds you, but 3 gets a lot better. And Vol. 1 is just amazing.
(By the way, I meant vol 4 is amazing.)

Last one I saw/rented was Transporter 2. It was a great action movie with, I will admit it, alot of unbelievable stunts. the fighting sequences are well done and my only complaint is the girl in it is made out to be this major bad ass but in the end...well...no need to spoil it but lets just say she isn't. All in all a great movie if you like your action fast and exciting.

unlike the storyline in Champloo, it doesn't hint at the characters ever existing before the pilot.
It does. Just not as early as Bebop. Jin's past is intoduced in vol 2. And Mugen's past is really jump-started in the begining of vol. 4.
I'll watch volume two in the near future. If that's terrible too, though, there's no way I'll be giving the rest of the series a chance.
You wont regret it. I'll admit to vol.1 having a lack of character build. If I remember, in the first episode, they meet up. Jin's character is intoduced as well-manored and merciful. Mugen just wants to look for the tougher guy and move up the food chain. And Fuu wants to find that samurai. Episode 2 is basically a 'The Ninja Scroll' homage. It's a pretty damn good episode, IMO. Of corse, 3 and 4 are the first 2-part episodes. Not the best. The others are better. Although, the ending was cool.
Since I'm having another bout with insomnia, I've been up all night watching movies. Just got through watching The Legend of Hell House, one of the more faithful adaptations of Richard Matheson's novels, although it is, by today's standards, a little cheesy. This story would stranslate very, very well into a modern horror movie, but Hollywood would, no doubt, **** it up and make it into another gay movie.
Big Trouble in Little China - Not bad. I was expecting better due to the hype though.
Scanners - Good concept, loved the guy's head exploding at the beginning. I need to rent a better copy of this though. It keeps going back for some reason so I can't really judge whether it dragged on too long or not. Every once in a while, it would jump back 20 min. So I've been watching an hour and a half movie for a really long time now.
