Overall, its selling more units, thus being more successful.
Who cares if its doing better in individual counties or towns or cities. That means nothing at all.
Both have been somewhat crappy. PSP hasnt destroyed Nintendo like people thought it would and the DS hasnt solidifiy Nintendo's stronghold in handhelds. In the end, its the GBA and its counterparts that are still ruling. Maybe 3d isnt the best medium for handhelds.
My bad, Zombie. I meant DS is outselling the PSP.

PSP can sell less but it costs more obviously it wouldn't sell as much if it came out later at a higher price would it?
It doesnt matter how much it costs, if the demend is high enough, people will buy it. Thats the fault that the PSP has, its not pratical to buy unless your going to play it nonstop. Its an handheld, which are generally played while on the move. People forget this. If I had the PSP and a Sony PS2 and was at home, im going to play the PS2. People though, arnt going to buy it for something to do while on the bus, or in a car, or on a plane because its costs 349.99 CAN and thats bloody expansive for a 15min trip. The DS on the other hand costs 199.99 CAN or an GBA SP for 89.99 CAN. Thats a more reasonable alternative.
The PSP is a great piece of hardware (aside from some defectives and durability) but for what the system is used for, its somewhat unpratical. It doesnt help out that the games for the system right now, are pretty crappy. I rather save my money and buy a next gen console or 10 games for my PC or GC.
Also, the DS is leading in sales on average per week than total sales. Total sales mean nothing, but if somethign is leading weekly, its doing better.
Exactly in a sense, though it does matter the price, you inadvertently said it, I wouldn't need a small movie player for this or that and I would like to focus more on games I agree, but I'm waiting for a price dropand better games, games make the system.
Nintendo will have people buying it the same reason that people buy sony home consoles, they trust them. Sony does the different genre, but the DS games and durability make it ideal for children as well, and its cheaper price made it apparent it would sell more.
I'm not much of a handheld person myself, and I still have only my blackand white gameboy, and my gamegear(battery killer), but I wouldn't pay more for something I wouldn't play at home, where next gen is more superior, thats why I stick to CD players on trips.
But the PSP is a superior system hands down.
