JLA VS. X-Men : The End To The Debate

Part One

The controversy surrounding this battle is staggering. There seems to be a bitter line between those who believe the X-Men would win and those who think otherwise. Therefore I elected myself to end this debate once and for all. I am going to give an unbiased argument as to why one team would prevail against the other. Both teams’ strengths, weaknesses, past achievement as well as past failures will all be taken into consideration. In order for this to have any merit, a consensus or rather a set of rules must be established.

1. The Environment that both teams will fight on is completely and utterly featureless: no buildings, no cars, no gophers, and no conveniently placed objects of weakness. This environment is that much of Earth. It adheres to all the laws of nature and physics.
2. The two teams know nothing of each other. They were plucked from their respective realities and were forced to fight each other for no apparent reason. They will give it their all and won’t hold back. The characters will act like their characters, so no lethal actions are permitted. (e.g. death from above heat vision) (with the possible exception of Wolverine, since he kills quite often).
3. The teams that have been selected represent the core members of the both teams and consist of the characters that have been most integral to their respective teams. No villains are permitted, regardless of prior affiliation. The number of characters on both teams is even and they are fairly balanced. The characters are at their normal power levels, thus no uber version of characters are permitted. (e.g. Ion, Diana, Goddess of Truth, Superman Prime) The teams are as shown:

JLA
Superman
Wonder Woman
Batman
The Flash (Wally West)
Green Lantern (Kyle Rayner)
Aquaman
Martian Manhunter

X-Men
Cyclops
Phoenix (non-cosmic entity)
Storm
Wolverine
Rogue
Iceman
Colossus

NOTE: The teams selected were given careful consideration. I know that a lot people will disagree with my roster but I will defend it with the best of my ability. To start off, picking the characters was not easy. I had to give both teams a fighting chance and balance the power levels between both teams. The JLA team is completely irrefutable. Any other incarnation is simply up to par. The roster above is final. Hal Jordan is not back yet, so Kyle is still Green Lantern. The X-Men is a completely different story. There are so many X-Men to choose from and their rosters change sporadically. Thus it was difficult to find an end all team. Finally I had to choose a team that was comparatively equal to that of the JLA. A team consisting of Kitty Pryde, Nightcrawler, and Archangel simply wouldn’t do, not to mention I would be denounced as a biased X-Men fan boy. So I had to choose a team that consisted of core members that were integral to the canon, and a team that was powerful enough to stand against the JLA. Speaking of which, no planet-destroying Phoenixes. It would be completely unfair to the JLA team. Jean Grey only has her telepathy and telekinesis. I know that Jean Grey is now deceased, but I felt she was too important to the X-Men canon to simply leave out. Also Prof. X will not be fighting because he is not really an X-Man. He is more of a sidelines guy like the Oracle is for the JLA.

pre or post crisis supes (like it makes a difference)

Post Crisis. I'm not done yet, give me a minute

kay sorry

Part Two: The Battle

The Fastest Move First

For the JLA, this would be the Flash, followed by Superman, followed by Wonder Woman. Although Martian Manhunter has super speed, he would sense a telepath on the X-Men and would fall back and render himself invisible and intangible. For the X-Men, Rogue, Iceman, and Colossus would charge the other team as per orders of their field leader Cyclops. Wolverine would also charge the JLA regardless of whether Cyclops wants him to or not. Storm has the potential to fly at speeds approaching Mach 3, but prefers to stay in the back ranks to summon elemental havoc to ravage the JLA.

Assessment

At the start, Jean Grey immediately senses not one but two powerful telepaths on the other team. (MM & AM) Jean then places powerful psychic defenses in her teammates' minds to prevent telepathic assaults. Meanwhile, Martian Manhunter does the same for his teammates, while he attempts to breach the psi-walls Jean has placed on her team. Batman places himself far away from the battle occurring between both teams and orders Green Lantern to use his ring to scan their enemies for information. Utilizing decades of battle experience, Aquaman waits just behind point, watching and waiting for an opportunity to strike. The two X-Men field leaders provide distance attacks all the while discussing battle strategies telepathically via Jean.

The Battle Between Points

While Superman and Colossus trade powerful blows, Rogue and Wonder Woman lock hands and attempt to overpower the other. Iceman is quickly taken out with a brief flash of heat vision. After realizing that the X-Men’s point consisted of largely invulnerable opponents, zips out of the skirmish and heads to the back ranks of the X-Men. With his heightened senses and indomitable battle experience, Wolverine spots a red blur and extends his claws into the Flash’s intended path. The Flash dodges Wolverine’s well-placed blow and responds with a few thousand punches and kicks before continuing his trek to the X-Men’s back ranks. Wolverine is down but not out due to his healing factor. Dodging optic beams, lightning bolts, and telekinetically thrown debris, the Flash proceeds to take out Cyclops, Jean Grey and Storm, only to run into a telekinetic wall conjured by Jean.

Wonder Woman and Rogue trade terrible blows, but the battle quickly begins to favor the Amazon Princess. With her vastly superior strength, speed, and warrior know-how, Rogue finds herself on the precipice of defeat. Realizing that her opponent is too powerful to defeat, Rogue takes off her gloves and attempts to utilize her absorption powers. Theoretically, Wonder Woman is extremely vulnerable to Rogue’s skin-to-skin absorption powers due to her usual lack of clothing. Rogue immediately grabs hold of Diana’s bare skin and begins absorbing her powers. Due to the magical nature of Wonder Woman’s powers, the absorption is not instantaneous but she is by no means immune. Rogue is growing more powerful by the minute and gains several of Diana’s memories, or more specifically information regarding the JLA. Rogue immediately alerts Jean and begins transmitting these memories to her teammates so that they know what they are dealing with. Weakened but not yet defeated, Diana uses a complex martial art maneuver to wrest herself from Rogue’s grip.

Meanwhile, Colossus is completely exhausted from attempting to dent the other Man of Steel. Superman is about to perform the knockout blow, when Wolverine suddenly springs from behind cutting Superman’s back with his adamantium claws. Temporarily stunned from Wolvie’s assault, Superman returns the favor with a whiff of ice breath coating the Canadian X-Man with ice and temporally immobilizes him. Colossus tries to take advantage of this distraction but is quickly k.o.ed by a powerful blow from the Last Son of Krypton.

Part Three: The Battle Continued

During the skirmish between Superman, Wonder Woman, Colossus, Rogue, Iceman and Wolverine, Cyclops and Storm have been assailing the JLA with powerful optic beams and elemental weather attacks. Optic beams are easily deflected by Wonder Woman’s silver gauntlets and Superman actually seems to absorb them. Storm summons hurricane force winds, a blitzkerg of lightning bolts, and a barrage of hail stones. But the JLA is ill-affected by any of her attempts. Jean devotes all of her energies to throw off J’onn’s mind probes while attempting her own mind probes on the League. The Flash is unconscious after hitting a telekinetic wall and his telepathically induced to sleep to make sure he stays down. Wolverine is freed from his ice tome by an optic blast courtesy of Cyclops, only to find himself face to face with Aquaman. Green Lantern and Batman stay in the back ranks, confident that Superman and Wonder Woman can handle the X-Men for the moment. Green Lantern uses his ring to scan the X-Men and finds that they are some sort biologically evolved humans. This is verified by Superman’s microscopic scans. With a full list of their powers and capabilities, Batman heads into the battle. Green Lantern follows and rockets towards Storm. Knowing better than to involve himself in Diana’s battles, Superman flies towards Jean and Cyclops and attempts to shatter Jean’s TK field. After absorbing some of WW’s memories, Rogue telepathically distributes them to her teammates via Jean’s telepathy.

Aquaman and Wolverine spar, each trading well-placed blows. Wolverine, however quickly gains the favor. Bleeding profusely, Aquaman attempts a massive telepathic assault. Wolverine has lived with several of the world’s most telepaths and shrugs of this endeavor with some minor discomfort. Aquaman is then skewered by a trio of claws. MM, sensing that Aquaman is in trouble, halts his psychic mind probes and rescues Aquaman from certain death. MM angrily lashes out with a blast of Martian Vision burning Logan to crisp. Wolverine is once again pulled from the edge of unconsciousness due to his healing factor. Green Lantern easily reflects all of Storm’s attacks and wraps her in an emerald green straitjacket.

Wonder Woman’s warrior temper grows thin from Rogue’s boasting and energy-absorbing blows. Utilizing years of experience and training, Diana launches a series of dizzying blows and martial art maneuvers. Rogue experiences a sense of déjà vu as she once again finds herself on the brink of defeat, and attempts to absorb more of Diana’s powers. Diana is ready for her however and unleashes a nerve strike paralyzing Rogue. Wonder Woman finishes her with spinning roundhouse kick that makes Rogue’s head swivel back and thusly falls into unconsciousness.

After executing a dozen acrobatic moves, Batman finds himself face to face with a freshly healed Wolverine. The two engage in bloody tussle that defies the ages. Both are masters of the martial arts. Both have years of battle experience. But the battle slowly drifts in favor of the feral mutant. Batman backs of with several bruises and large gashes strewn across his body. Batman cradles a broken wrist and a shattered hand from an attempt to break Logan’s unbreakable bones. From prior observations, Batman deduces that Wolverine is impossible to defeat through conventional means. Thusly Batman breaks out his utility belt. Sonic weapons, tear gas, vomit pellets, and a dozen razorrangs hit an already enraged X-Man. Wolverine heightened senses are ferociously assaulted but his healing factor compensates. Wolverine suddenly goes into berserker rage and unleashes more than two hundred years of martial art knowledge on the Dark Knight. As the Caped Crusader’s life flashes before his eyes, Wolverine is about to perform the killing blow when he is suddenly struck down by a flurry of silver blows, a flash of heat vision, and a blast of green plasma’s: Wolverine’s teammates already defeated.

While Batman and Wolverine sparred. Superman, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern beset Jean Grey’s tenuous TK shield. Her energies overwhelmed by the raid, Jean suddenly drops her psychic defenses enabling MM and a healing AM to telepathically knockout both Jean and Cyclops. The X-Men are defeated.

PHEW! That was fun. After you guys read this thread, please respond with any and all comments or arguements. I'll make a rejoinder to these comments tomorrow. THANKS!

duuuude...that was in depth...well done......u've made a believer outa me....i think this was probably the most realistic battle for the two teams....with each character on their normal respective levels....however..i dun realy lke how easily cyclops was taken down....but still good....n e wayz...with the characters u have chosen...i would have gone for the JLA

I'll give you some props for the effort, but you still should've kept this topic in it's original thread:

http://www.killermovies.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=28659&highlight=XMen+vs+JLA

Fair warning, Paola might end up merging this one with the original.

Oh, and the debate won't end. Everyone will always see this battle in one way or another. Although, I still give to win to the JLA, as I always have.

dont mess with the fan boys, they will rip this thread apart

first of all its really well written, props dude...

i always believe the jla would triumph given those line-ups...

cyclops taken down so easily, and supes absorbing his blasts? i'm a huge fan of both, and that would never happen...

Cyclops was taken down in retrospect to what he is capable of and what his usual attack pattern consists of. He usually attacks from a distance, and strategically that would be perfectly sound with the powerhouses running around on the other team. Also Cyclops is a solar battery. His optic blasts come from solar energy. Superman is a solar battery. Thus Superman can absorb Cyclops optic blasts since the energy is solar in nature.

i know what his usual attack patterns consist of. but i believe the energy patterns they absorb are too different because they are channelled so differently, so i dont believe supes could do it...

This conjecture is noted and valid. Even if Superman was unable to absorb Cyclops' blast, they wouldn't do that much harm to any of the JLA. Unless he unleashes a supremely powerful attack like one you have at the bottom of your thread, The JLA would topple him. Even he did unleash an ultimate attack, there are various ways the JLA could protect themselves, an exhausted Slim would be taken out thusly.

i have no doubt even with a blast like the one in my sig (which hurt onslaught), the man of steel would get up, brush himself off and take out cyclops.

ive always said the jla would win, because they're simply more powerful...

Anyone else

yeah dude, jla is a cadre of powerhouses. J'onn is now slouch in the psychic depot. he's more than a match for a non-cosmically enhanced jean. i mean, we're talking about a guy who brainwashed over 70 other powerful psychics in one fell swoop.

I worship marvel and all, but in my heart I know the JLA would kick the Xmen a$$. Side note. Their was no Gambit in the matchup. That just plain wrong.

Sorry I forgot Gambit. I mean c'mon there's like a hundred of them. I can't remember them all.

Dude Gambit is Xmen 3 movie bound! How could you forget him. It be like forgeting Piccolo in a Dragonball Z brawl....sorry about getting off topic and all.

Even if I added Gambit, the result would be same. Gambit would have probably got his behind handed to him by Wonder Woman AND Rogue, after he came on to the well-endowed Warrior Princess
