sure. I'm just asking if you think Spielberg is also pretentious. He did the same thing with Schindler's List as McQueen did with 12 Years... "Here's what my people went through"

Not for the same reason as you, but I also think Steve McQueen is definitely pretentious. That's not to say he's not a good director, but he has a certain air about himself.

Maybe it's just I choose movies to be entertained, to escape reality for an hour or so...I just don't understand the need for movies based on historical tragedy.

So you cry, praise the lord it didn't happen to you or your immediate family, acknowledge the torment & pain....and then what?

That's my whole point...and then what?

i tend to watch movies like that for the acting performances, not the historical reverence.

Your opinion is retarded.

At least I can share my opinion without childish name-calling.

Alright, I'm sorry about the name calling. I'm just under a lot of stress right now from reading your retarded opinion.

Sounds like a great idea for a movie...

His opinion isn't retarded. It's intellectually disabled. #politicallycorrect

Oh my mistake....slavery was good ol' times!

All that singing & dancing, free meals & accommodation.
A bit of kinky whip action on the side... hell, the movie should've been a comedy!

So what makes it any more pointless then a happy movie? Some people like more sorrowful tales or things that explore the human condition in real tragedy.

I totally understand the different genres in movies & I also fully comprehend that people watch movies for different reasons...to feel good about themselves...to laugh at the ridiculous...to loose themselves in fantasy or get pumped up from action/adventure...or cry & weep about tragedy.

If 12 Years A Slave depicted slavery that still happens today or sex-trafficking or forced child labour...I would fully grasp the sense of tragedy & feel the anger. I would understand the need for such a movie to bring to light to people who are unaware or ignorant to the plight that is still happening today.

But it's 2014 now. The movie depicts something that happened roughly 400 hundred years ago. We can't change the tragic past. We can't turn to our fellow Black American & show sympathy or apologise for actions our ancestors did....at the end of the day, all we can do is vote that this movie gets an oscar & praise it for glorifying human tragedy.
Yeah...thanks but no thanks.

Actually it's an adaption of a book. I'm guessing fans of the book would find it pointful. And yes, that's a word... Now.

You have got to be f*cking kidding.

My mistake...not 400 hundred years ago.
The movie is set in 1853.
Further facts state that by 1850 only 125 plantations in the U.S had only 250 slaves.

Soo this isn't about you not liking the movie is it?

Yes, Northup's story was also made as a television movie before McQueen read the memoir himself.

Girlfriend's fine. They stole my hubcaps.

You lose points for missing out on making a "N*gga stole my bike" reference.
