Interesting
Borderland: 5.5/10
I picked this movie due to the unusually high 100% fresh rating on Rotten tomatoes, and being somewhat familiar with the case the movie was based on I checked it out. I'm not quite sure what justifies some of the ratings, as from what I gathered this was pretty standard horror from the mid 2000s. The lighting is grimy and gory and reminds me of the Rob Zombie films from the same era. What the movie suffers from is just issues with memorabilty none of the cast clinches it for me, the main lead who falls in love with the bartender isn't memorable, the Virgin who ends up as the sacrifice had one pivotal scene, and overall nothing stood out for me enough to recommend this. If you like forgettable dime a dozen horror films like this with solid production, this might do it for you but I'd recommend just watching something on YT about Adolfo De Jesus
Bad Lieutenant (8/10)
What to say about this other than its a ****ed up film about debauchery, a descent into madness, with a nun being raped, a man being pushed to his limits/finding tragic redemption, and Harvey Keitel killing it as an addict cop that descends into gambling debt and tries to do the right thing by finding the cops. He burns the candle at both ends and rights the wrongs, and Keitel is by far the driving force behind the movie with his breakdown in the Church and just a well acted Bad cop role. I love crime films like this
Justice League WAR: 7/10
DC animated movies tend to never really deviate in quality, either being strong and unique properties (Gods/Monsters)/(Public enemies) or at best being Meh like Superman: Doomsday. The portrayals in this movie don't deviate much from the expected roles, (other than Superman) Wonder Woman is socially awkward, Hal Jordan is an arrogant prick, and Batman is cold and intelligent, Flash has virtually zero time apart from combat scenes, and Superman for some reason comes across as an ******* (trying to kill Hal/Bruce, and just coming across as arrogant). My main issue being how the film is mainly just filler filled with killing parademons, and way too much time spent on Cyborg a relatively boring character. Wonder Woman stole the show by beating the shit out of Darkseid, and all and all there isn't much else to add other than its a solid entry in the Direct to video lineup
Pacific Rim 5/10
I got this knowing what to expect and perhaps I shouldn't be so hard on the film. For the positives the visuals are absolutely gorgeous, the fightscenes between the Jaegers and Kaiju are breathtaking, the robots smash the hell out of the Kaiju, but these Fishlike beasts match the dazzling destruction with appendages and bioluminescence not out of place in a David Attenborough narrated documentary about the Ocean. Idris Elba performs well as Marshall and his speech to rally the pilots reminds me a lot of the speech in Indepedence day, and he genuinely adds some heart to the film with the scenes he has with Mako. The actor that plays Charlie from Always sunny adds some comedic roles with his attempts to telepathically connect with the Kaiju, and honestly they're the best actors in the film. The movie fails at getting anyone invested in the characters, and there are a ton of plot holes i,e that Kaiju not destroying the Jaegers instantly with the EMP blast, the boat in the first fight not being destroyed by the fight, among other things. And honestly the run time between doesn't leave much for development, and you're just sort of left inbetween scenes mildly amused by the comic relief and half paying attention to the fight scenes/final battle when they cross into the Kaiju dimension and blow it up. The movie has gorgeous visuals but it ultimately forgettable.
The Legend of Tarzan
8 out of 10 marvelous simply marvelous Hollywood hit a home run with a movie.
This is a amazing movie that is basically Tarzan begins with flashbacks including how Tarzan met Jane.
Those fearing Jane will be the typical predictable damsel nothing she isnt.
It manages to be much like Indiana Jones it's a serious movie but still has its funny light hearted moments. Tarzan's strength and fighting feats including easily defeating soldiers in a train with the rest seeing it's a futile fight so they don't fight him. A bulky Soldier gives Tarzan a challenge but still impressively he knocks him through the damn side of a Train. Samuel Lord Jackson plays a kickass character that is a amazing shooter with some typical expected funny lines.
Great acting, great music, great costumes that fit that the time period, great environments, great 3 dimensional believable characters characters, great action, great drama, has a decent amount of Roman, and a amazing climax that has you believing a victory for Tarzan and his allies to be very slim.
