The Man from Earth: Holocene (2017)
Liked it, but it didn't have any resolution because they want to do more. Hopefully they will do more.
Eye for an Eye (Netflix) 7/10
A Revenge film about a nurse who by chance lands a dying drug lord into his hospice. The film unwinds with a drug deal between Colombians/Chinese/Spaniards gone bad, and his two sons trying to get the ailing father whose being poisoned by the nurse for the death of his brother. The Nurse walks the line between the birth of his son, hatred for the father, and trying to stay ahead of the authorities/the drug lords children. Its a violent film and the ending is proof there is always a price to be paid for revenge
Tigers are not afraid 9/10
Another Spanish horror/fantasy film that floored me with its violence, tragedy, and realistic depiction of the aftermath of Cartel violence. The movie is about children who have to survive after their parents are killed by a gang. A little girl gets three wishes in the form of a chalk board, and joins a gang of orphans who find a cellphone with damning evidence of a cartel murder. There is a clear Guillermo Del Toro influence, and for 90 minutes its a heartbreaking film of children who only have each other to depend on.
Knives Out. Really liked it, though not sure the endings twist made much sense.
Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. Really, really good. Fully deserved a Best Picture nomination, so that's a bit of a snub.
Uncut Gems. Watched about half of it and it is definitely not an Oscar snub. It actually has some trippy shit, but I could only take so much of Adam Sandler being an annoying jeweler.
The Signal 7/10
A film about 3 brilliant college students who trace a hacker across the country who hacked MIT. They soon realize they're in over their heads when they receive coordinates at a sketchy location, and they wake up in a Cold war-era bunker. Laurence Fishburne plays a seeming government scientist who gradually lets the kids know they've been exposed to more than just a hacker. Fishburne channels his past performance as Morpheus, as the kids realize they're no longer merely human. For a short scifi/horror film its an entertaining flick from the guy that directed Underwater.
Eraserhead ????/10
Lynch's vision in any project he embarks on is always dreamlike and haunting. I'm not sure if this qualifies as a straightforward narrative as first viewing, a lot of elements familiar with Twin peaks occur (the strange dream creatures, and the Black lodge floor). A guy with a bad haircut named Henry lives in an industrial wasteland and takes care of a fishlike-child, and then has all manner of strange dreams and food objects bleeding. All manner of nightmarish dream sequences occur and then its back to reality, and him being stuck to this child who drives him to insanity? Its like a more bizarre version of the Lighthouse from the visionary behind Twin peaks. I can't rate it
Scanners 7/10
I could type more on this but im stretched for time. I really liked this film as it has a ton of missed opportunities and potential for remakes/a tv show. Psychic individuals run from a company that wants to weaponize them, and Daryl Revok who has ambitions for taking over the world. Only one can stop him but Revok is pulling the strings to lead him to himself. There are a lot of plot holes but the movie is one of the better cult films, from Cronenberg's mastery of body horror, the classic 80's synth soundtrack, to the psy battles reminiscent of Xmen. I really enjoyed this film and hope it gets a remake, even if it suffered from what prime franchises like Friday the 13th/Hellraiser went through i,e tons of horrible VHS remakes. There's a lot here that can be expanded on
